VICE-President Guy Scott?s wife, Charlotte, yesterday led more than 10 Cabinet ministers? spouses in cervical and breast cancer screening at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.

Mrs Scott urged Members of Parliament and the public in general, especially women, to raise awareness about cervical and breast cancer.

She said there was need for women to undergo breast and cervical cancer in their respective constituencies in order to prevent it or to encourage access to early treatment.

?Zambia is not only champions in football but in a lot of things such as fighting and addressing cancer and other real issues affecting people,? she said.

The screening was conducted at the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Research in Zambia within the UTH premises.

Mrs Scott said cancer was a life-threatening disease that needed to be addressed by every woman on a daily basis.

She called for concerted efforts among stakeholders in sensitising women and their partners on cervical cancer and other related diseases.

Centre for Infectious Diseases and Research in Zambia head of cervical cancer training and prevention, Sharon Kapambwe said Zambia had a high rate of women suffering from different cancers.

Dr Kapambwe said more than 90,000 women, of which 18 per cent came from Lusaka, were successfully screened for cervical cancer.

She said more people in rural areas still lacked screening facilities compared to those residing in urban areas.

Dr Kapambwe said Zambia currently had 17 sites in every province where people were free to access screening and treatment services. ?
