The Board Game Family Great Board Games to Go Around ? The ...

We hope you had a fantastic Christmas break and are looking forward to a nice New Year?s break as well (if even for only 1 day). We had a great time with family and friends and even got to play a few board games during the festivities.

With a whole week off of work I had great plans to catch up and post a few board game reviews that we?ve filmed. But, as you can tell, that hasn?t happened. It?s just been so fun and relaxing to kick back and simply enjoy time with family. So all the editing and writing was placed on the shelf for a while.

Snowshoeing

Donuts here we come!

Last weekend we spent a bunch of time together leading up to Christmas ? including going with the kids as they bought presents for each other (each child getting their own 1-on-1 time at the crowded stores). The day before Christmas we started with sledding in new fallen snow and ended Christmas Eve at grandparents house decorating gingerbread trains and trees, reading new Christmas storybooks, playing chimes, playing carols with kazoos, feasting, and eating too many desserts. And Christmas day brought more fun times with the kids and extended family (and more food).

Snowshoeing

The Donut reward!

The last few days we?ve spent new toys, reading books, watching movies, and going snowshoeing. With almost 4 steady days of snow, the snowshoeing was fantastic! It?s the first time we?ve gone as a family and we had a great time. There?s a place up a canyon near our home called Donut Falls that?s a great family hike both in summer and winter (3 miles RT). So we bought a dozen donuts and hiked to Donut Falls to eat them. It was a great treat/reward for making it to the falls.

Oh ? and I recall playing a board game or two this week as well.

In fact, one board game that we got for Christmas has been played daily by the boys with constant talk of playing again and again. And at 1:30 am this morning it was almost played yet again ? but, we decided sleep was a good option too.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition board game

Bring on the dungeon monsters!

What the big board game hit this Christmas? Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition.

It?s the first ?dungeon crawler? game that our family has played and it has been an immediate hit. And with the amount of open-ended possibilities with the game, I think it will continue strong well into the future. With how big a hit it?s been, we?ll get a full review up as soon as we can. But to give you a quick glimpse, it?s a game with heroes venturing into dungeon-type scenarios to battle monsters and accomplish quests.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition board game

Battles in progress.

One person plays the side of the Overlord who controls the monsters and the rest are the heroes. The game is chuck-full of miniatures, cards, tokens, and double-sided board pieces to make up the dungeons. There?s 23 page Rulebook and a 43 page Quest Guide. So getting up and running took quite some time (for dad at least ? going through it in preparation). But, the boys are hooked and can?t get enough. And even though we?ve only played a handful of scenarios so far, Trevor?s already wanting to create his own scenario.

Memoir ?44 ? above and beyond
One of the items I had at the top of my Christmas board games with list was an expansion for Memoir ?44. And while I didn?t receive one of the expansion sets, I got something completely unexpected and fantastic from my Dice Tower Secret Santa ? the Memoir ?44 Campaign Book Volume 1. The Campaign Books add a new level of fun to Memoir ?44 and the Volume 1 is out of print. So it was very sweet to get this gift and after playing it this week, I?ll agree that it?s a great addition to my Memoir ?44 fix.

The next board game gift we opened on Christmas was the 7 Wonders: Cities expansion. It hasn?t hit the table yet, but we?re looking forward to playing it soon ? once we can clear the big table of Descent. :)

Caleb was also given the R2-D2 Star Wars game of Trouble. It?s still the same luck-driven simple game of rolling dice and moving your pieces around the board, but I have to admit that the R2-D2 sounds when you pop the dice popper adds some spice to the game.

The gift of time together.

Another gaming gift came from Jaden in the form of a coupon book. It seems he took a page out of Trevor?s gift book from last year and gave me coupons for game time with him. With a book almost constantly in his hands, he?s sometimes the toughest to get to sit down to play games with. Now I have an ace up my sleeve with his game coupon book.

Thursday night we also had some of our neighbor father and sons come over for some fun and games. We didn?t introduce them to any of the new games but instead pulled out a few older ones and ended with a full 7-player game of Shadows Over Camelot ? in which the knights were defeated by the traitor amongst us. Even though the 6 brave knights lost, we had a great time playing.

And that?s what board games are all about ? having fun with family and friends.

So whether we play old games are new games, simple games or more involved games, many games once or one game many times, it?s all about enjoying the time together.

We hope you have a very enjoyable time with your family as you start the New Year 2013!

Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos full fight video highlights from UFC 155

Check out the highlights from Cain Velasquez's five round destruction of Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 155 on Sat., Dec. 29, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, to win his heavyweight title back.

Cain Velasquez absolutely destroys Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 155 last night (Sat., Dec. 29, 2012) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, to win back the heavyweight title he lost over one year ago. Put simply, this was damn near a snuff film, as Cain beat "Cigano" from pillar to post for five full rounds, keeping the pressure on for 25 minutes. He wore down towards the end but his early offense was enough to completely take the Brazilian out of his game. It was bizarre, really, seeing Dos Santos handled with such ease but the narrative coming out of the first fight was proven correct. "JDS" has said he'll work his way back to third showdown but after this destruction, would you even want to see it? Scientists home in on cause of osteoarthritis pain

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Researchers at Rush University Medical Center, in collaboration with researchers at Northwestern University, have identified a molecular mechanism central to the development of osteoarthritis (OA) pain, a finding that could have major implications for future treatment of this often-debilitating condition.

"Clinically, scientists have focused on trying to understand how cartilage and joints degenerate in osteoarthritis. But no one knows why it hurts," said Dr. Anne-Marie Malfait, associate professor of biochemistry and of internal medicine at Rush, who led the study. An article describing the research was published in the Dec. 11 print version of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Joint pain associated with OA has unique clinical features that provide insight into the mechanisms that cause it. First, joint pain has a strong mechanical component: It is typically triggered by specific activities (for example, climbing stairs elicits knee pain) and is relieved by rest. As structural joint disease advances, pain may also occur in rest. Heightened sensitivity to pain, including mechanical allodynia (pain caused by a stimulus that does not normally evoke pain, such as lightly brushing the skin with a cotton swab), and reduced pain-pressure thresholds are features of OA.

Malfait and her colleagues took a novel approach to unraveling molecular pathways of OA pain in a surgical mouse model exhibiting the slow, chronically progressive development of the disease. The study was conducted longitudinally, that is, the researchers were able to monitor development of both pain behaviors and molecular events in the sensory neurons of the knee and correlate the data from repeated observations over an extended period.

"This method essentially provides us with a longitudinal 'read-out' of the development of OA pain and pain-related behaviors, in a mouse model" Malfait said.

The researchers assessed development of pain-related behaviors and concomitant changes in dorsal root ganglia (DRG), nerves that carry signals from sensory organs toward the brain. They found that a chemokine known as monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 (CCL2) and its receptor, chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2), are central to the development of pain associated with knee OA.

Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 regulates migration and infiltration of monocytes into tissues where they replenish infection-fighting macrophages. Previous research has shown that MCP-1/CCR2 are central in pain development following nerve injury.

In the study, following surgery the laboratory mice developed mechanical allodynia that lasted 16 weeks. Levels of MCP-1, CCR2 mRNA and protein were temporarily elevated, and neuronal signaling activity increased in the DRG at eight weeks after surgery. This result correlated with the presentation of movement-provoked pain behaviors (for instance, mice with OA travelled less distance, when monitored overnight, and climbed less often on the lid of their cage -- suggesting that they avoid movement that triggers pain) which were maintained up to 16 weeks.

Mice that lack Ccr2 (knockout mice) also developed mechanical allodynia, but this began to resolve from eight weeks onward. Despite having severe allodynia and structural knee joint damage equal to that in normal mice, Ccr2-knockout mice did not develop movement-provoked pain behaviors at eight weeks.

To confirm the key role of CCR2 signaling in development of the observed movement-provoked pain behavior after surgery, the researchers administered a CCR2 receptor-blocker to normal mice at nine weeks after surgery and found that this reversed the decrease in distance traveled, that is, movement-provoked pain behavior.

Interestingly, levels of MCP-1 and CCR2 returned to baseline or lower by 16 weeks in mice exhibiting movement-provoked pain behaviors. This finding may suggest that the MCP-1/CCR2 pathway is involved only in the initiation of changes in the DRG, but once macrophages are present, the process is no longer dependent on increased MCP-1/CCR2.

"Increased expression of both MCP-1 and its receptor CCR2 may mediate increased pain signaling through direct excitation of DRG neurons, as well as through attracting macrophages to the DRG," the researchers said.

"This is an important contribution to the field of osteoarthritis research. Rather than looking at the cartilage breakdown pathway in osteoarthritis, Dr. Malfait and her colleagues are looking at the pain pathway, and this can take OA research in to a novel direction that can lead to new pain remedies in the future," said Dr. Joshua Jacobs, professor and chairman of orthopedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center.

Treatment of OA in the United States costs almost $200 billion annually. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is expected that by 2030 nearly 70 million adults in the U.S. will have been diagnosed with some form of arthritis.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, an estimated 27 million Americans live with OA, but, despite the frequency of the disease, its cause is still not completely known and there is no cure. In fact, many different factors may play a role in whether or not you get OA, including age, obesity, injury or overuse and genetics.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the oldest and most common forms of arthritis and is a chronic condition characterized by the breakdown of the joint's cartilage. Cartilage is the part of the joint that cushions the ends of the bones and allows easy movement of joints. The breakdown of cartilage causes the bones to rub against each other, causing stiffness, pain and loss of movement in the joint.

Malfait's co-researchers on this study were Rush scientists Rachel E. Miller. PhD, Phuoong B. Tran, PhD, Rosalina Das, and Nayereh Ghoreishi-Haack, and Dr. Richard J. Miller, PhD, and Dongjun Ren from Northwestern University.

India gang-rape victim 'struggling' to survive, hospital says

    Piyal Adhikary / EPA

A young woman, one hand covered in fake blood, takes part in a protest Friday in Calcutta against the gang rape of a student who is now clinging to life.

    By Reuters

SINGAPORE -- An Indian gang-rape victim whose assault in New Delhi triggered nationwide protests earlier this month has suffered "significant brain injury" and is surviving against the odds, the Singapore hospital treating her said on Friday.

The 23-year-old medical student, who was severely beaten, raped for almost an hour and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi, was airlifted to Singapore on Dec. 26 for specialist treatment.

Photos: Police try to temper outrage over gang rape

"The patient is currently struggling against the odds, and fighting for her life," Mount Elizabeth Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Loh said in a statement.

"Our medical team's investigations upon her arrival at the hospital yesterday showed that in addition to her prior cardiac arrest, she also had infection of her lungs and abdomen as well as significant brain injury."

The victim had already undergone three abdominal operations before arriving in Singapore, where her condition on Thursday was described as "extremely critical."

Demonstrations over the lack of safety for women erupted across India after the Dec. 16 attack on the unnamed victim, culminating last weekend in pitched battles between police and protesters in the heart of the capital.

    Rape ignites outrage

    Protesters call for execution

Should the woman die, it could trigger fresh outrage over the case, which caught Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government off guard and triggered a blame game between politicians and the police.

"We share the anguish and anger with the country over this heinous crime," Singh told reporters on Friday. "Our prayers are with the brave young girl and best possible medical care is being provided to her."

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Protests continued across New Delhi, India, where around 500 people marched in response to the recent gang rape of a young woman. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

MSR Online ? Encore careers: They're not just for seniors anymore

ChangingCoursesquareUpon entering my 40th year, I decided that I needed a mid-life career change. I knew that it would be something drastically different from the course that I had embarked on in 1988 as a bright-eyed, newly graduated genetics student. My growing concern for the economic advancement of women, workforce development, and a desire to be my own boss urged me to move in a new and different direction.

While working in a corporate setting for 22 years, I went back to school and obtained a master?s degree in human resource development. For years, I did pro bono work to gain experience. I launched my first consulting practice in 2004.

Today, I provide human resource development consulting to individuals and nonprofit organizations. I am having the time of my life, and this is truly what many people refer to as an ?encore career.?

    What is an ?encore career??

After career transitions, retirement, life changes, etc., you may find yourself having to regroup and start over again. Depending on your age and financial status, you may not be able to retire in the traditional sense and collect benefits or a pension. Many people find that they just aren?t ready to stop contributing as part of the American workforce.

A growing trend is to use your authentic vocation or passion to meet a need and get paid for it. These are also called ?encore careers.? We often think of retirees as having the time and freedom to do what they love, but younger boomers (45-55) are finding encore careers to be very fulfilling and lucrative.

According to Wikipedia, an encore career is work in the second half of life that combines continued income, greater personal meaning, and social impact. These jobs are paid positions, often in public interest fields such as education, the environment, health, the government sector, social services, and other nonprofits.

    ?

    Getting started

Before you get started, make a list of skills and abilities that you possess. In particular, list items that you can turn into a business. Editing, dog walking, r?sum? writing, hairstyling and writing are a few businesses that can be started as home businesses. But remember, your clients will expect the same quality that your employer expected of you, with the addition of this special ingredient: great customer service! Customer service can make a business thrive or cause its demise.

If you choose to use your corporate experience to do good, let everyone know. Join associations and let key decision makers and influential people know that you are on the market and looking for a way to leave your legacy and leverage your corporate experience in a way that is satisfying to you.

    olderworker

    Tapping into the gray

Barry Bluestone, dean of the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Northeastern University, predicts that within the next eight years there could be at least five million potential job vacancies in the United States, nearly half of them (2.4 million) in social sector jobs in education, health care, government and nonprofit organizations. The loss in total output could limit the growth of needed services and cost the economy as much as $3 trillion over the five-year period beginning in 2018.

Bluestone?s analysis builds on the ?2008 MetLife Foundation/Civic Ventures Encore Career Survey? conducted by Peter D. Hart and Associates. This work shows that most people expect to work longer than previous generations, but that half of those aged 44 to 70 want encore careers. ?Not only will there be jobs for these experienced workers to fill,? Bluestone writes, ?but the nation will absolutely need older workers to step up and take them.?

    ?

Get ready, get ready, get ready!

As the stats suggest, things will change ? the economy, demand for experience which only seasoned workers can bring, value, interests, etc. But remember, time is of the essence for when you?re the boss and taking charge of your new career. If you are not ready to ?settle down,? then brush off your skills, show the world what you?ve got, and get busy! What are you waiting for?

FICCI demands 30% income tax on income above Rs 20 lakh

Industry body Ficci has demanded that the highest income tax rate of 30 per cent should be levied on income above Rs 20 lakh as against Rs 10 lakh currently from next fiscal to encourage consumption.? This needs to be re-visited as the tax rate of 30.9 per cent (inclusive of education cess) on income of Rs 10 lakh and above casts a sizeable burden on the middle class, reducing the disposal surplus in their hands for consumption spending,? the chamber said in its pre-Budget memorandum to the Finance Ministry.

It suggested that the maximum rate of personal income tax of 30 per cent be made applicable to income of over Rs 20 lakh from the financial year 2013-14.

In recent years, it said, the personal income taxation has been streamlined resulting in reduction of tax liability at all levels, but has not gone far enough.

The chamber, under its new president Naina Lal Kidwai, also suggested to reinstate the standard deduction for salaried employees to at least Rs 50,000 to ease the tax burden of the employees.

Also, ?the Government may look at increasing the overall deduction limit under section 80C to at least Rs 2 lakh to boost further investment and increase tax savings for the individual,? Ficci added.

With the property prices and interest rates rising steeply, it said, there is a need to revise the deduction limit to at least Rs 2.5 lakh per annum in harmony with the prevailing high interest rates.

Ficci further recommends that there is a need to de-link deduction for educational expenditure for children from Section 80C and provide under a separate provision like Section 80D of the Act for medical insurance.

Tuition fee is eligible for deduction under section 80C of the Income Tax Act. The Chamber is also for raising the tax exemption limit on expenditure in medical treatment.

2012 was a dangerous year for journalists

    Zohra Bensemra / Reuters file

Journalist Marie Colvin, second left, poses for a photograph with Libyan rebels in Misrata, June 4, 2011. She was among 67 journalists killed worldwide in 2012, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

    By James Eng, NBC News

The civil war in Syria, targeted shootings in Somalia and continued violence in Pakistan made 2012 a particularly dangerous year for journalists, with at least 67 killed worldwide in direct relation to their work, according to an organization that defends press freedom.

The fatality numbers compiled through mid-December?by the Committee to Protect Journalists?represent a 42 percent increase over 2011. The committee says 2012 is on track to becoming one of the deadliest years for journalists since it began compiling records in 1992.

Coupled with snapshot figures showing a record-high number of journalists imprisoned worldwide ? 232 on Dec. 1 ? this year has been a year of living dangerously for those who work to gather and disseminate news, said Joel Simon, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists.

?You put all that together and it?s a very bleak picture,? Simon told NBC News on Thursday.

?I would say this has been one of the worst years. There?ve been years when we?ve had higher numbers of journalists killed, but the combination of near-record fatalities and record journalists imprisoned -- ?put those together and you have to acknowledge?that this is one of the worst years on record."

Syria was by far the deadliest country for journalists in 2012. According to committee statistics, 28 journalists were killed in the fighting or targeted for murder by government or opposition forces. Among them were Marie Colvin, an award-winning American correspondent who worked for The Sunday Times of London, and French freelance photographer Remi Ochlik, both of whom were killed in a rocket attack in the Baba Amr neighborhood of the besieged city of Homs on Feb. 22.

Julien De Rosa/ho / EPA file

French photojournalist Remi Ochlik works in Homs, Syria, in 2012.

Twelve journalists died this year in Somalia, where the militant Islamist group al-Shabaab has been waging a violent insurgency against the Mogadishu-based federal government. All were murdered, according to CPJ, which says not a single killer of a journalist has been prosecuted in Somalia over the past decade.

Pakistan, the deadliest country for journalists in 2010 and 2011, dropped to third this year, but the number of fatalities held steady at seven, the committee reported.

In?Brazil, four journalists were killed -- the country?s highest annual toll in more than a decade.??In small cities, bloggers and writers for small newspapers and Web portals who are calling out corruption are being targeted,? Gabriel Elizondo, a correspondent for al-Jazeera in S?o Paulo, was quoted as saying by CPJ. ?The profile is usually the same: It?s a small-town journalist, working for a small outlet, who gets gunned down."

Watch World News videos on NBCNews.com

The worst year on record for journalist killings was?2009, when 74 people died because of their work ? nearly half of them slain in a massacre in Maguindanao?province, Philippines, according to CPJ.

Simon said the record-high number of imprisoned journalists as of Dec. 1 also was ?extremely disturbing.?

?One reason is what?s happening in Turkey. There?s a massive crackdown under way on political expression and political dissent largely focused on the Turkish minority. ?Many of the journalists in jail are Kurdish,? he said.

NBC's Richard Engel and his production team made their homecoming late Thursday night. In their first in-depth interview since being freed, Engel and his team, including cameraman John Kooistra, producer Ghazi Balkiz and two other crew members, tell their story about spending five days in captivity in Syria and the trauma they survived. NBC's Savannah Guthrie reports.

?Other places we?ve seen an increase (in detentions) are places where there have been repressive policies (against the media) for some time, like China, Eritrea, Syria, Iran,? Simon said.

The imprisonment numbers, because they were tallied on Dec. 1, don?t include NBC News? Chef Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and members of his network production team. They were captured and held in Syria for five days?before being freed after a firefight between the captors and a Syrian rebel group at a checkpoint on Monday, NBC News said.??In any case, CPJ's tally doesn't include journalists who are abducted by "non-state actors," Simon said.

Journalists who worked online made up more than one-third of the death toll in 2012, compared with one-fifth in 2011, CPJ noted.

?More independent journalists are working online closer to the action and getting killed as a result,? Simon said.

?Think about how front-line news is being gathered today.? In a lot of countries around the world, dissent is limited and curtailed. There?s no opposition to express critical views in the media, so people for last decade or more have been expressing those critical ideas online. ?Governments have been cracking down on this.?

Existing Home Sales Increasing | Daily Business News

According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), the annual pace of 5.04 million existing homes sold in Nov. 2012 exceeded experts prediction of 4.9 million, and rose above the 4.76 million sold in Oct. and the 4.39 million in Nov. 2011. Amazon Instant Video now available on some Google TV devices

Hot on the heels of making it available on the iPhone and iPod touch, Amazon's now bringing a native app (it's also accessible via Chrome) for its Instant Video service to Mountain View's TV platform. Granted, the on-demand application doesn't appear to be compatible with some devices at the moment, with a few folks pointing out that they are not seeing it be friendly with their particular Google TV-powered set-top box -- including ones such as the Logitech Revue and the (much) newer Vizio Co-Star. Here's to hoping the giant e-tailer makes Instant Video friendly with more Google TVs pretty soon -- currently, only LG's sets are officially on the compatible list.

Want to Avoid Capital Gains and Get a Tax Deduction? ? All Things ...

How to Give Like a BillionaireTax rates are almost certain to increase in 2013. But did you know that there is something you can do to avoid capital gains tax and get a tax deduction to boot? If you regularly give cash to your favorite charities, early planning and strategic gifting could net you and your favorite charity more than you expected. This holiday season, consider giving appreciated stock instead of cash to charity?its one way you can avoid paying capital gains and get a tax deduction.

    Larger Tax Deduction
According to ?Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy?, Americans gave close to $300 billion to charities in 2011. There are so many ways to help your favorite charity: you can donate your time, clothing and other household items, vehicles and boats, and of course money. But, did you know that you can also donate stock? In fact, if you own highly appreciated stock, you might be better off donating the stock versus cash. Let?s assume you plan to give $5,000 to charity this year. You could write a check for $5,000. However, if you own stock that you purchased for $1,000 and it?s now worth $5,000, the IRS allows you to deduct the fair market value of the donated asset (the higher amount). A win-win situation for both your charity and you.

    Zero Capital Gains Tax
Capital gain is the profit you make on the sale of an asset; it is the difference between the sales price and your cost. Capital gains are subject to tax, and the maximum tax rate is currently 15 percent, but it is highly anticipated to rise in 2013. Continuing with the same example, assume you bought $1,000 of PowerShares QQQ (index fund that tracks the NASDAQ) several years ago, and it?s now worth $5,000. If you sold your QQQs, you would owe capital gains tax on the profits ($4,000) of about $600. However, if you donate your shares, you will not only receive a $5,000 tax deduction, but you will also avoid having to pay capital gains tax on the profit.

    About Donor Advised Funds
Although donating stock can be a smart move from a socially conscious perspective as well as a financial one, many smaller charities are not setup to accept stocks as donations. Additionally, what if you do not want to give the entire $5,000 to one charity? It can be administratively difficult to subdivide stocks into small donations if you were planning on making several ?smaller? donations to multiple charities. From a purely financial perspective, sometimes it is usually more prudent to make one large donation for tax and estate planning purposes. The good news is that through a donor advised fund, you can do both: make one large donation and decide later on which charities will get the money.

A donor advised fund is an investment vehicle that lets you irrevocably donate cash, securities, or other assets to the fund to get the tax deduction in the year you fund it. Once donated, the assets belong to the fund and you recommend whom the fund should donate money to. The donor advised fund can either make the donation in your name or anonymously. Continuing with our previous example, assume you donated the $5,000 of PowerShares QQQ to a donor advised fund in the year 2012, you can then have the fund make donations on your behalf whenever and to whichever charities you wanted in much smaller increments. While donor advised funds are very easy to manage and setup, like most things in life, they come with a cost. Some firms impose annual fees and others require a minimum donation to start the fund, so do your due diligence. But given the numerous tax, financial, and estate planning benefits, a donor advised fund is still worthwhile to consider.

NIH small business awards per capita by State | DrugMonkey

hmm. looks just like the political Red State / Blue State division, doesn't it?

Only in this case the government largesse is going preferentially to the Blue, instead of the Red. (Also see this).

The Blue states are getting more government investment in Small Business, the Red ones more government investment in, well, the dole. Interesting, isn't it?

Chicago ultra-luxury homes for sale down only 4.1% in 3rd quarter

The number of listed Chicago homes for sale priced $3M or higher in the 3rd quarter was down 4.1% from 3rd quarter 2011.* There were 140 Chicago ultra-luxury homes for sale compared with 146 a year earlier. There were no distressed sales (short sales and foreclosures).

The Chicago ultra-luxury inventory hasn?t dropped nearly as much as the overall luxury market. Recently, I wrote about how Chicago luxury homes for sale reached a 4 year low in the 3rd quarter.

Quarterly Inventory of Chicago Ultra-Luxury Homes For Sale 3rd Qtr. 2009 - 3rd Qtr. 2012

Quarterly Inventory of Chicago Ultra-Luxury Homes For Sale 3rd Qtr. 2009 - 3rd Qtr. 2012

The number of Chicago ultra-luxury homes sold in the 3rd quarter was down 18.8% from a year earlier. There were 13 such sales.

Chicago ultra-luxury home pending sales were down 30.8%. The average days on market for pending sales was up 9.1% at 239 days.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR CHICAGO ULTRA-LUXURY HOME BUYERS

It?s still a buyer?s market since inventory levels haven?t changed much and don?t look like they will soon. The inventory of homes priced $5M and higher is actually up 37.5% from a year ago, so there are opportunities to negotiate aggressively in that price range.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR CHICAGO ULTRA-LUXURY HOME SELLERS

I don?t recommend selling unless you really need to. With increased competition in the $5M+ market you?ll have to be even more competitive. As always, if your home is priced right when it goes on market, it will sell in a reasonable amount of time. However, ultra-luxury homes do take significantly longer to sell on average than lower priced homes since there is such a small market for them. As mentioned above the average days on market for ultra-luxury homes in the 3rd quarter was 239 days. For all Chicago homes for sale it was only an average of 124 days.

5 Weeks of Giving - The Chronicle of Philanthropy

Anthony Allen and Bryan Hall of the Baltimore Ravens autographed items for the ?5 Weeks of Giving? kick-off event held by Volunteers of America Chesapeake.

Thirty-five days of nonstop outreach online are helping one charity raise money at year?s end.

Volunteers of America Chesapeake?s ?5 Weeks of Giving? campaign aims to do something new for its supporters each day. For instance, on ?Text Tuesday? it urges donors to donate $10 by sending a text message.

    Other themed days include:

    * ?Motivation Monday,? when the charity features an inspirational quote on its Web site and social networks.

    * ?Wednesday?s Word,? when the charity spotlights on its site one of its values (caring, respect, faith, quality, and trust).

    * ?Thank You Thursday,? to highlight one big donor on social-media networks and e-mails.

    * ?Fun Friday,? a time to offer details on ways to help the charity, such as hosting drives to collect books for needy people or volunteering to serve a meal at one of the nonprofit?s homeless shelters.

On Saturdays, the Volunteers of America affiliate checks in with the charity?s supporters on Facebook and Twitter, often promoting conversation about programs or events where people can volunteer or donate.

On Sunday mornings, the charity posts inspirational tweets and Facebook messages from the affiliate?s chaplain.

In addition to promoting giving and volunteering on Twitter and Facebook, the charity is chronicling all of the efforts during the five weeks of giving at its blog.

So far the campaign is on track to perform well, the charity says. The effort ends January 6 with a goal of raising $100,000; it is already 25 percent of the way there.

    First freshwater mosasaur discovered

    Thursday, December 20, 2012

A new mosasaur species discovered in Hungary is the first known example of this group of scaled reptiles to have lived in freshwater river environments similar to modern freshwater dolphins, according to research published December 19 in the open-access journal PLOS ONEby Laszlo Makadi from the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Hungary and colleagues from the University of Alberta, Canada and MTA-ELTE Lend?let Dinosaur Research Group, Hungary.

The species lived about 84 million years ago, the largest specimens reached about 20 feet in length, and belongs to a family called ?mosasaurs?, conventionally thought of as gigantic finned marine lizards, similar and perhaps even related to present day monitor lizards. The researchers discovered several fossils of the new species, ranging from small juveniles to large adults that suggest that this species had limbs like a terrestrial lizard, a flattened, crocodile-like skull, and a tail unlike other known members of the mosasaur family.

The fossils were recovered from an open-pit mine in the Bakony Hills of Western Hungary, which were once flood-plains. According to the study, this is the first known mosasaur that lived in freshwater, and only the second specimen of a mosasaur to have been found in rocks that were not once deposited in the ocean. Makadi says, "The evidence we provide here makes it clear that similar to some lineages of cetaceans, mosasaurs quickly adapted to a variety of aquatic environments, with some groups re- invading available niches in freshwater habitats. The size of Pannoniasaurus makes it the largest known predator in the waters of this paleo-environment."

Even in the modern world, scaly reptiles in the aquatic world are extremely rare. Only a few species live in the water, and even fewer, like marine iguanas and sea kraits, live in the oceans. The new species described here probably adapted to freshwater environments similarly to river dolphins, such as those now inhabiting the Amazon, Ganges and Yangtze rivers.

(AP) ? Though Adele didn't have a new album or a worldwide tour in 2012, she's still rolling. After a year of Grammy glory and James Bond soundtracking, Adele has been voted The Associated Press Entertainer of the Year.

In 132 ballots submitted by members and subscribers of the AP, Adele easily outpaced other vote-getters like Taylor Swift, "Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James, the South Korean viral video star PSY and the cast of "Twilight." Editors and broadcasters were asked to cast their ballot for the person who had the most influence on entertainment and culture in 2012.

Adele's year began in triumph at the Grammys, took a turn through recording the theme to the 007 film "Skyfall," and ended with the birth of her son in October. The ubiquitous Adele was that rare thing in pop culture: an unqualified sensation, a megastar in a universe of niche hits.

By the end of the year, her sophomore album, "21," had passed 10 million copies sold in the U.S., only the 21st album in the Nielsen SoundScan era (begun in 1991) to achieve diamond status. Buoyed by hits like "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep" long after its release in early 2011, "21" was also the top-selling album on iTunes for the second year running.

As David Panian, news editor for Michigan's Daily Telegram, put it: "It just seemed like you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing one of her songs."

Women have had a lock on the annual Entertainer of the Year selection. Previous winners include Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Betty White and Tina Fey. Stephen Colbert is the lone male winner in the six-year history of voting.

The Grammy Awards in February were essentially the de-facto crowning of the 24-year-old Adele, whose real name is Adele Adkins, as a pop queen. She won six awards, including album of the year. It was also a comeback of sorts for Adele, who performed for the first time since having vocal cord surgery, drawing a standing ovation from the Staples Center crowd.

Accepting the album of the year award, a teary Adele exclaimed: "Mum, girl did good!" The emotional, sniffling singer endeared many viewers to her when she copped in her acceptance speech to having "a bit of snot."

"This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone's been through it: just a rubbish relationship," said Adele.

But her luck in love has since turned, thanks to her boyfriend Simon Konecki. In an interview with Vogue magazine, Adele said she was through with break-up records and done being "a bitter witch." When Adele announced in June that she was having a baby with Konecki, her website promptly crashed under the heavy traffic. Their son was born in October.

With such an avalanche of success and now a mother of a newborn son, Adele has understandably taken a step out of the spotlight. One notable exception was recording the opening credits theme song to "Skyfall." The song was recorded with her "21" producer Paul Epworth at the Abbey Road Studios in London with a 77-piece orchestra. Within hours, it zoomed to the top of digital charts.

"There was an overwhelming embrace of Adele and her music," said Joe Butkiewicz, executive editor of the Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. "And that was never more evident to me than when I heard teenagers express their enthusiastic expectations for the new James Bond movie because Adele performed the theme song."

The song recently received a Golden Globe nomination. No Bond theme has ever won the best original song Oscar, but given Adele's awards success thus far, it wouldn't be a stretch to think she has a chance of changing that. The tune is among the 75 short-listed songs in the Academy Awards category.

Mother's Best Friend Says Husband Blamed Her, Baby's Death on ...

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. ? The civil trial involving a former Lee?s Summit, Mo., police officer is underway in Independence, Mo. The parents of Misty Mansfield Horner, who died after a month-long illness following the stillborn birth of her daughter, is suing her husband, Caleb Horner, and others in a wrongful death lawsuit.

Prosecutors have declined to file criminal charges against Horner, Misty?s husband, because they weren?t convinced that Misty wanted to seek medical treatment. Misty?s parents, Darrell and Gail Mansfield, disagree. They said she was brainwashed believe Caleb and others are responsible for her death.

Misty?s best friend, Tina Moore, testified that she was in the room when Misty gave birth to a stillborn daughter. Moore said she, too, believes Caleb is responsible for Misty?s death.

Caleb was a Lee?s Summit, Mo., police officer. He and his brother, John, began a religious organization that does not believe in hospitals or modern medicine. According to Moore, their religion required Misty to be submissive to Caleb at all times. In December 2006, Misty went into labor. According to Moore, Caleb hired two midwives who were unqualified to deliver a baby Moore said they asked her to look up information in guide books. According to Moore, Misty was in labor for days. The baby, named Sydney, was breached and did not survive the delivery.

Moore said Caleb?s brother used scissors to perform an episiotomy. Misty later became infected with sepsis. According to Moore, Misty?s family and friends begged Caleb to take her to the doctor, but Caleb refused. Misty died 31 days later.

?Misty could not get medical treatment because Caleb would not let her,? Moore said. ?It was decided among him and his family that she was going to die.?

Misty?s parents said they were kept away from their daughter, but when they finally saw her, it was apparent that she was dying. They asked Caleb Horner to take her to the hospital, but they say he refused, calling the situation ?God?s will.? Witnesses said at one point, Misty put her clothes on to go to the hospital, but was convinced that she just needed to believe in God?s healing power.

During her testimony, Moore said Caleb blamed the baby?s death on Misty?s family, calling it ?generational sin? and that it was God?s way of punishing them.

One of the midwives has settled out of court with Misty?s family for $300,000. The other midwife and Caleb?s family are a part of the civil lawsuit that is expected to end this week.

FRIDAY, Dec. 14 (HealthDay News) -- Every Christmas, Linda Russell knows her three children's wish lists will be chock-full of requests for the latest in electronic toys and gadgets. And, like most parents, she struggles to know when to give in and get the requested new computer or when to say no to the latest video game.

"It's a toss-up," she said. "Sometimes it seems like the electronics provide a benefit, like computers -- it surprises me how much information is at their fingertips. Whatever subject they might be interested in, all they have to do is Google it, and the information is so accessible. It's fantastic." Plus, she said, they really can't do without a computer for schoolwork anymore.

However, Russell, who lives in Croton on Hudson, N.Y., also noted concerns often voiced by parents.

"Sometimes, they completely zone out -- whether it's the computer or video games, [and] I worry they may get too disconnected from real life," she said.

She also worries about her youngest, at age 8, being exposed to things past her maturity level. Her two oldest, 17- and 15-year-old boys, like to play video games, and much of that content just isn't appropriate for an 8-year-old, she explained.

"I don't want to punish the older ones and tell them they can't play because of the younger one," she said, so the family has designated a room in the home where the boys can set up their games and where their younger sister isn't allowed when her brothers are playing video games.

Russell took another step to make sure that the electronics aren't keeping anyone up at night, setting up a family charging station out of the bedrooms. "Ideally, we have everything in one place at night," she said.

If the family's rules aren't followed, Russell said, she and her husband don't hesitate to take away the devices. "With video games, you can take away the controllers and leave the game in place," she pointed out.

Though electronics definitely pose a parenting challenge, Russell said, the benefits probably outweigh the extra time needed to watch over kids' technology time.

Wooden hip be lovely? Replacing damaged bones with implants based on wood

Dec. 13, 2012 ? Could aging and damaged bones be replaced with implants based on wood? That's the question Italian researchers from the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) writing in a forthcoming issue of the International Journal of Healthcare Technology and Management hope to answer.

Accidental damage, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, bone cancer and other diseases, represent a constant threat in the lives of millions of people and, with the progressive aging of the world population, this threat can only increase. Indeed, more than 2.2 million bone grafting procedures are performed annually around the world and this number is increasing as lifestyles change and people live longer. As such, finding biomimetic materials that are similar to bone in terms of strength, flexibility and density is a pressing concern for medical scientists. The hope is that it might be possible to displace or at least augment metal alloy implants using such materials.

The structure of some woods at the microscopic level is very close to that of natural bone and it shares some of those desirable properties, such as unique biomechanical properties, i.e. high strength and lightness at the same time, due to its hierarchical organization.

Now, Ugo Finardi (Institute for Economic Research on Firms and Growth-CERIS-CNR, and University of Torino), and Simone Sprio (Institute of Science and Technology for Ceramics -- ISTEC-CNR), have carried out a case study on the implications of a new technology recently developed by the Research Group on Biomaterials of ISTEC. In that work, the researchers, Anna Tampieri, Simone Sprio and Andrea Ruffini, took inspiration from nature and used a nanotechnological approach to transform rattan wood into hierarchically organized implants. These biomimetic materials have a strength and flexibility similar to natural bone, something that cannot be achieved with current metal alloy technologies.

The technology described by Finardi and Sprio explains how the hierarchical physical structure of rattan wood might be used as a scaffold for creating a synthetic material to replace damaged and lost bone. An additional benefit is that such a material could be load bearing, a factor that has precluded the use of earlier biomimetic materials.

The processing of the raw wood to remove chemical components incompatible with implants for humans is long and complex but the benefits of producing a material that is so similar to bone and can be shaped to fit perfectly far outweigh such issues, the team suggests. The process involves heat treatment of the wood to remove cellulose, lignin and other plant materials but to leave behind a carbon skeleton that can then be infiltrated and reacted with calcium, oxygen and phosphate to make a porous material, chemically and mechanically mimicking bone. The Research team says that unlike metal alloys, ceramics and even donor bone, their patented material is low cost, has very good biomechanics, is biocompatible and can be integrated into existing bone, thus properly assisting bone regeneration.
