The Advantage Parents Have With An Online Admission System

Mr. Mohan was a senior architect who worked for an Australian Company and ran his own consultancy chamber in a recently developed glamorous township of Delhi. He sat from 4p.m to 8p.m everyday in his little office and attended to people who wanted their house plans made up. Closer to the submission of the property tax, people would line up outside his office to get their property plans regularized. He would do all that because he liked his job immensely. In the mornings Mr. Mohan would supervise the progress of the 7 start hotel that was coming up near the IGI Airport.

That was his routine everyday, except for Sundays when he would sit at his chamber. But for the past week, Mr. Mohan had kept his consultancy chamber closed because he was busy visiting schools. He should have put up a board to tell all his client?s he would not be available for a week, but the point is that his absence from his little office was taking more than a week.

Mr. Mohan would stand for hours in a line waiting to buy school admission forms for his son who was ready for class 1.

At times, he would take his son Vikrant with him on his visit to umpteen schools, but after all he was a kid and couldn?t wait with his father in a line for long. After a week, Mr. Mohan asked his friend Sandeep if he could sit at his chambers. Sandeep sat for a few days and then had to go out of station because his father-in law was not well. This left Mr. Mohan quite frustrated with the way things were going on. He had barely covered 3 schools from what he knew of the point system and didn?t feel very confident that his child would surely get into those schools.

There were parents buying 50 forms, to widen the scope of getting their child admitted in a school. Mr. Mohan made a mental calculation of how many days he would have to keep his office closed. In a week he would only be able to collect 20 forms. He also had to pay up for the rent of 20K for his office and he had missed 3 days of good business already. He was now loosing out on an income. Mr. Mohan?s friend Sandeep sensed his worry while conversing over the phone.

That day Sandeep met a young school teacher who had checked into the same hotel. Since Sandeep was on holiday, he was enjoying himself but couldn?t forget Mohan?s worry and at dinner chanced to ask the lady teacher whether there was any other way by which schools could be traced. She thought for a while and asked whether he had tried onlineschooladmissions.com where right from the choice of schools to the submission of documents and scheduling an interview, everything was done online and the parent only had to take the child for the interview. That night, Sandeep had an answer for Mohan and it made them both very happy.

Portal Like online school admissions cater to parents and helps makes school admissions a delightful experience. Incase you are on the lookout for the school in Surat, school in Indore, School in Mysore and don?t know where to begin, relax! OSA does everything for you right from filling up your form, submitting them online and scheduling a date for your child?s interview.OSA also posts Blogs on the Internet on topics related to education and parenting and understands a child?s world perfectly.

How Roofing Professionals Can Assist You with Ice Dam Eradication

Winterization is among the most essential preparation practices needed for preserving homes. Garages, windows, attics, doors, and roofing systems are among the parts of residential buildings which are covered by this process. Shingles and the rest of the roofing frame must be cleaned and conditioned to help them endure the cold blows of the forthcoming winter time.

Nonetheless, no matter how ready roofs may be, there are some inescapable incidents like the development of frozen portions or ice dams on the roofing structure. These often originate from the intricate reaction between the external temperatures and heat loss from a house interior. Unfortunately, ice dams melt through time and result in ugly leaks on walls, ceilings, and attics.

If these aren't instantly taken out of the roofs, ice dams may cause more damage by leaking through the layers of shingles and by rotting the wood roofing frames. Gutters may also be affected; this can lead to problems on flooding. In the future, the heavy frozen weight on the gutters can drag the structure down and completely ruin roofing systems.

And so before it gets far too late, homeowners should learn about the fundamentals of ice dam removal to spare their rooftops from expensive and troublesome devastation. As proposed by experienced home builders, residents may start by cleaning up their roofs and gutters so ice dams do not have anything to begin with. The axiom 'prevention is better than cure' is also appropriate to roofing systems.

On the other hand, those who are already problematic regarding their frozen and sliding roofing systems may start with modest attempts of ice dam removal. They can ascend to their rooftops and properly get rid of the formations, and they may also modify interior ventilation systems to prevent heating their roofing systems further. However, given that climbing up on roofing system is dangerous specifically during snow storms, homeowners are instead advised to get in touch with roofing emergency service from trustworthy Twin cities roofing experts.

For instance, reputable Minneapolis roofing professionals can carry out the required examination as well as the actual ice dam eradication. They do not have to worry about climbing up on roofing systems because these skilled professionals can definitely get the job done. Even though Minneapolis and its twin city always have snowy winters, residences can nevertheless be safeguarded as risks of ice dams are eliminated.

A group of St Paul roofing experts can also deliver repairs and replacements in case of roofing segments damaged by the frozen dams. These roof professionals can offer removal services to liberate homes from mounting risks and problems. For additional info on removing ice dams from roofing structures, go to ehow.com/how_8030144_flat-roof-ice-removal.html.

The dumb report on congressional dumbness

Are conservatives stupider than liberals?

That?s one way to read the lively parlor-game data released this week by The Sunlight Foundation, a six-year-old educational concern that attempts to make government more transparent. Sunlight?s report?which assigned grade levels to how members of Congress talk?revealed that the most right-wing of our representatives express themselves, on average, at the lowest grade level in Congress.

?No abortion,? you can imagine these simple-minded conservatives saying. ?It is bad.?

According to the report, Democrats have a more sophisticated way of expressing themselves. Democrats evidently use multi-syllabic words ? like ?moreover? ? and more complex sentence structure than their colleagues on the right. Replete with internal clauses ? the ones that can throw off listeners and muddy a point ? the rococo stylings of Democrats evidently go hand-in-hand with the promotion of their pet causes, like universal health care and of course their longstanding war on antidisestablishmentarianism.

Republicans dominate the extremes of the list ? both the speaker at the highest level and the one at the lowest are members of the GOP. Their average grade level is 10.4; that of Democrats is 10.8. Sunlight has also made a point to say that eloquence, or verbal complexity, anyway, is on the wane among lawmakers. Congress as a whole now apparently speaks like high school sophomores, one grade level lower than it did in 2005.

I like the foundation?s freestyle, groundless and yet stirring account of why this might be so: ?Perhaps it reflects lawmakers speaking more in talking points, and increasingly packaging their floor speeches for YouTube. Gone, perhaps, are the golden days when legislators spoke to persuade each other, thoughtfully wrestled with complex policy trade-offs, and regularly quoted Shakespeare.?

If you skim Sunlight?s findings, and bring to them a sporting quotient of party prejudice, you might conclude that Republicans are, say, ?idiots? and Democrats are, oh, ?showoffs.? To use the pre-K-level idiom preferred by the biased twerp in each of us.

If, however, you listen to a sampler of speeches by various congresspeople at a range of oration grade-levels, you might find something completely different. I listened to Daniel Lungren, whose speech at grade 16.01 (first week of summer school after college graduation?) outranks every other congressperson, give a Memorial Day greeting in 2009. (The Sunlight report analyzes each figure?s speeches since 1996.)

Lungren, a Republican from California, sounded low-key? and didn?t stutter, but he repeatedly used the euphemism ?fallen? instead of ?died.? Trying to get choked up and earnest about the Civil War dead ? the Civil War ?fallen? ? he sounded fakey and insincere.

I also listened to John ?Mick? Mulvaney, a Republican from South Carolina, who is the low man on the grade-level totem pole. He is said to speak at a 7th-grade level.

Like many English Ph.D.s who have taught writing to undergraduates, I was ready to condescendingly award this kid points for ?clarity? and ?forthrightness? while privately calling him illiterate. But no such condescension occurred to me once he started to talk. Mulvaney is terrific ? a natural orator who toggles nimbly between irony and seriousness, doesn?t miss a note and ? unlike most seasoned politicians ? never goes on rhetorical autopilot. He stays in the room; his emotions in the moment color his speech; and he responds to his audience.

After thanking the organizers of the June 8, 2011, town hall meeting in Lake Wylie, South Carolina, Mulvaney ? in a deceptively casual and even self-deprecating way ? elegantly prevented boredom by setting the stage for a short, engaged talk with a clear timeframe. He sowed anticipation in the audience for a spirited Q&A. He set people thinking about their questions and set up a reward system for attention-paying. And he unobtrusively laid out the topics of his speech. That is rhetoric.

?Basically, it?s about half an hour?s worth of information that we?ll go over. And then at the end I?ll shut up and answer questions for pretty much as long as you all want to sit around. I think when we did this in Rock Hill, we did questions for almost an hour and a half, maybe two hours. And I will take all of the questions. There are folks here who want to talk today about Medicare and Medicaid. There?s folks who want to talk about defense spending. I will answer all the questions that I can possibly answer.?

Mulvaney was an Honors Scholar at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service; he attended Harvard Business School; and he got a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This is the man that the Sunlight Foundation now says uses the diction and syntax of a seventh-grader? The least evolved speaker in Congress?
?
Something is flawed here. I?m beginning to think that the Flesch-Kincaid test, which invented the ?reads at an nth-grade-level? metric, is a crock.

Rudolf Flesch was an Austrian who emigrated to the United States, advocated phonics in the teaching of English, and published ?Why Johnny Can?t Read? in 1955. In the 1970s, he and J. Peter Kincaid, a psychologist and Navy scientist, first created their readability test for the military?s use with technical manuals.

The notoriously opaque U.S. Constitution merits a whopping 17.8 grade level, and the Federalist Papers come in at 17.1. Oh well sorreeee you fancy founding documents of the Republic!

On the other end of the scale, the Gettysburg Address lands at an 11.2 grade level. ?I Have a Dream? gets the grade of a freshman: 9.4.?

Feeling as though I could now face the test myself, I plugged this column into a Flesch-Kincaid readability index calculator. It came in at grade 11 ? slightly below Lincoln at Gettysburg but safely above Martin Luther King Jr. and ?I Have a Dream.?

I?m better than King. Somehow I?m not convinced.

Homes, structures destroyed in Nev. wildfire

A Nevada wildfire threatening 120 homes grew to 5,000 acres in less than a day and destroyed two residences as well as 17 structures, officials said Wednesday as crews prepared for another attack.

Firefighters are battling a series of dangerous blazes in the West and Southwest in dry weather and strong winds.

In northern Nevada, some 360 firefighters were trying to protect homes at the Topaz Ranch Estates near Wellington. The cause was under investigation.

No relief was in sight until Friday when rain and cooler temperatures are forecast. The only good news, the incident commander reported, was that for now the winds are pushing the fire "away from residential areas."

The fire is only 10 percent contained, but officials hope to have it under control by Saturday.

Blazes in rugged, mountainous areas of Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado have already forced the evacuation of several small towns and torched more than 70 square miles of forest, brush and grass over the past 10 days.

The Arizona blazes were the first major wildfires in the Grand Canyon state this year after a record 2011 fire season in which nearly 2,000 blazes consumed over 1,500 square miles, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

More than 1,100 firefighters made slow progress against the most dangerous of the blazes burning in the U.S. Southwest, the so-called Gladiator Fire in Arizona.

That fire, which has charred about 23 square miles of ponderosa pine and brush some 40 miles north of Phoenix, was 19 percent contained on Tuesday, up from 15 percent a day earlier.

"Stronger winds and very low humidity, along with high temperature and extremely dry fuels made firefighters' work more difficult" on Wednesday, a fire incident statement said.

Authorities added that the fire had torched two more structures, bringing the total to six.

The blaze, which has cast a pall of grayish smoke over the northeast Phoenix valley over the past week, has forced the evacuation of about 350 residents of the old mining town of Crown King and three other tiny communities nearby.

Crews battling the largest of the four Arizona fires, the 25-square-mile Sunflower Fire, had succeeded in reinforcing control lines on Monday, although authorities cautioned that dead trees burning sporadically in the remote, rugged Tonto National Forest could lead to smoke in nearby communities.

Arizona's smaller Bull Flat and Elwood fires were mostly contained.

In New Mexico, authorities said the summer community of Willow Creek was being evacuated as a precaution because of a fire sparked by lightning burning in steep, rugged terrain of the Gila Wilderness area, where two separate fires have burned around 11 square miles.

In Colorado, crews had the 12-square mile Hewlett Fire burning in the Roosevelt National Forest almost completely contained, fire officials said.

Reuters contributed to this report.

What the next generation of entrepreneurs will look like

'Generation Z' ? the children of Generation X ?? will be driven, high achievers for whom the constantly connected, social media world is ubiquitous. And the older generations will have to get used to their multi-tasking personalities

Here are my thoughts that I shared with the author for this story, which regular readers have heard me say many times:

Generation Y is the most entrepreneurial generation ever. Parents raised their children to be independent. This generation feels a general sense of distrust for large organizations and government.

What will be really interesting to watch over the next decade or so is the next generation coming along ? Generation Z.

These are the children of Generation X.? They share some characteristics with Generation Y.? For example, they seem to view entrepreneurship as a perfectly normal career path.

But they have some fundamental differences.? Unlike Generation Y, they will probably not be seeking balance and meaning in life from their careers.? They are driven, high achievers.? They are the first generation for whom the constantly connected, social media world is ubiquitous.

Should be a fun ride as they start to enter university programs like ours.? We will need to be adjusting our programs and probably our expectations as this group begins to replace the Gen Y folks in our classrooms.? They will challenge us to integrate technology and social media in our classes.? They will be looking for more high growth opportunities than the Gen Y folks have..? And we will have to get comfortable with their multi-tasking personalities.

This may be about the last generation I teach.? By the time they have worked their way through the system it will about time for me to open my bait shop.? I will always be teaching in some fashion.? I will continue writing and will certainly honor the life time warranty I offer my alumni.

I will be leaving the next generation ? will they be ?Generation AA???? ? to my younger colleagues.? Who knows what they will bring into this world!

Insert Coin: Troller 1D, the transforming robot that won't ruin your garden

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Image

A crawling robot that, at the touch of a button, curls up into a wheel and rolls away sounds a bit Robots in Disguise, doesn't it? Still, that's what roboticist Toby Baumgartner needs your cold, hard cash to build. Troller 1D is the first prototype of the modular automaton that uses a series of servos to take it anywhere it needs to go -- but it's not ready yet. The project needs $2,600 to get better servos and add some WiFi and Accelerometer features that'll get the 'bot rolling without any assistance. Once perfected, you'll be able to buy a kit with everything you need to build your own and terrify the local wildlife / your children.

Facebook Blames Shoddy Checking in Answer to Patent Fraud ...

When last we tuned in in the ongoing drama that is the patent infringement lawsuit that Yahoo aimed at Facebook, Yahoo had a CEO ? Scott Thompson ? who was full steam ahead in pressing the controversial legal action.

Now, multiple sources said, the Silicon Valley Internet giant has got a new one ? interim CEO Ross Levinsohn ? who is already reaching out to top execs at the social networking giant in hopes of finding a settlement.

Still, until peace reigns in the digital kingdom, the legal wrangling grinds on and, today, Facebook has answered Yahoo?s most recent claim of ?inequitable conduct? because of false statement by moving to dismiss it.

Yahoo had called many of Facebook?s counterclaims, using some of its own patents ?tainted? and said Facebook?s actions were ?retaliatory.?

Not so, answered Facebook lawyers today, claiming Yahoo did not do its homework and also that Yahoo had ?no coherent theory or facts suggesting deceptive intent.?

Among other issues, Facebook alleges in the clain that Yahoo did not check if Facebook had filed an inventor affidavit with the Patent Office, related to two of the patents. Except, um, it did.

?Yahoo claims that two of the ten patents Facebook asserts are unenforceable due to inequitable conduct. But all of these allegations are unsupportable and/or deficient,? said the Facebook filing. ?First, Yahoo claims these patents do not list Joseph Liauw as an inventor and that there is no sworn statement by Mr. Liauw in the Patent Office records explaining his omission. Yahoo?s claim is demonstrably false. Yahoo made this allegation without actually reviewing the publically available Patent Office records, because these records include the exact sworn statement from Mr. Liauw Yahoo claims is missing.?

What? Yahoo not good at checking? Hmm ? that sounds familiar!

Here is the latest filing, which is getting more legally confusing by the millisecond (I am totally glad I decided not to go to law school, so make it stop, Ross!):

Video Collaboration Service TenHands Launches Free Browser-Based WebEx Competitor

tenhands_homepageAs the capabilities of modern browsers expand and developing standards like Google's WebRCT initiative for real-time communications slowly find their way into most popular browsers, we'll likely see more video collaboration software that's currently still client-based move to the browser as well. TenHands, which is launching its private beta today (you can request an invite here) wants to be the first out of the gate in this market and sees itself as a direct competitor to Cisco's WebEx, Microsoft Lync and other incumbents in this space. The service offers free video conference calls, screensharing, as well as built-in support for sharing documents from your desktop and Box.net.
