Wild turkeys overrun Brookline, Mass.

Wild turkeys have been a strange but common sight in suburban and even urban areas in metropolitan Boston for some time, but some residents of nearby Brookline say the birds are becoming more common and increasingly aggressive in their town.

Emily Spieler, a Brookline resident for eight years, told ABCnews.com that it wasn't until around two years ago that she and her husband saw a turkey in their neighborhood.

"And there were a couple of them," Spieler said. "In our backyard."

Spieler described the area where she lives as the urban and densely settled end of Brookline, very close to the center of Boston.

Brookline police say complaints about wild turkeys in the town have doubled in the past two months, according to CBS Boston. One officer said he spends nearly every morning protecting students at Brookline High School from the turkeys.

"I've had them come after me," Brookline resident Jocelyn Guggenheim told ABCnews.com. "I cross the street to avoid them and I've never done that around a wild animal, even though I grew up in the woods."

Guggenheim said the birds often crowd sidewalks and both she and Spieler said the turkeys have caused several traffic jams by grouping together in the middle of busy intersections.

Massachusetts has an obvious connection to the turkey. It was in the commonwealth where the Pilgrims landed and later held the first Thanksgiving. Accounts vary on whether the Pilgrims and Native Americans shared turkey that day, but species meleagris gallopavo was hunted out of existence in Massachusetts by the mid-19th century.

Successful reintroduction efforts have brought the state's fall turkey population to around 20,000 birds. And such population growth definitely shows as more and more people encounter the birds.

Towns around Boston are beginning to respond to the problem by holding town meetings and informational sessions and hoping to find a solution to the nuisance birds.

Experts agree that the best way to avoid a confrontation with a wild turkey is to steer clear of it if possible, to not be intimidated and spray water at the bird if available.

Dropbox Security Tips - Business Insider

Even Dropbox is vulnerable.

Earlier this year, hackers were able to illegally access some Dropbox accounts. One of these was an employee account that stored a document containing Dropbox users' email addresses.

How-To Geek shares a few suggestions on how to lock down your Dropbox account:

  • Enable email notifications.?Under the "Security" heading of your Dropbox options, you can opt in to receive emails when new devices and apps are linked to your account. If you get an email and haven't recently added anything, then you know something's amiss.
  • Practice common sense with your passwords.?Don't re-use old passwords. Make sure your password is complex enough that it can't be randomly guessed. Change it every once in a while as well.

Check out the rest of these tips over at How-To Geek >

ACDSee Pro 6

ACD Systems' venerable pro photo-workflow app has come in from ever more serious competition from the big guns Adobe and Apple, with extensive improvements in Lightroom 4 and Apple Aperture 3.3. But the latest ACDSee Pro 6 offers a lot for pro and serious amateur digital photographers, including integrated maps that work with geo-tagging, local adjustment brushes, and support for 64-bit CPUs for faster performance. And it is a responsive, enjoyable, and powerful pro photo tool that's less expensive than its nearest competitor, Lightroom. Despite all this, ACDSee Pro simply can't keep up with advanced features that media software giant Adobe includes in its digital photo workflow application.

Getting Started
You can download a free, fully functional 30-day trial of ACDSee Pro 6 to see whether it's your cup of photo-editing tea. It's Windows-only (sorry, Mac users), working from XP SP3 to Windows 8. Once you download its small installer, which handles the actual large download. The program size showed up in Control Panel as 177MB, compared with Lightroom's 835MB, so it will put less of a dent in your disk space. When you first run the app, a Quick Start Guide appears over the interface, offering to take you through a tour of its modes and tasks. This is a great help, considering the extensive number of modes, features, and tools in the program.

Like Lightroom, underneath ACDSee builds a database, or catalog to save all your image file preferences and edits. This means the originals, or negatives, are left untouched, so you can always revert to the photo's original state; you can save files containing your edits with the Export command.

Both editors also offer plug-ins, but there's a wider range of offerings for Lightroom?in fact, Adobe maintains an online plug-in-sharing section on its site for this. One important set of plug-ins that you can use in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Aperture, and Corel PaintShop Pro are those from Nik Software, which do things like precise sharpening and color effects and are a standard among pro photo editors.

Interface
ACDSee's interface always feels fast and fluid. Everything just works the way you expect it to, making switching between different activities intuitive. I had no trouble getting back and forth between organizing, viewing, and editing; even large camera raw files displayed quickly. Like Lightroom, ACDSee uses a modular approach: All this means is that there are big buttons that set up the app for the different types of tasks involved in the photo workflow process?importing and organizing, adjusting, enhancing, and outputting. Since I last evaluated ACDSee Pro, the module selection has changed, with Manage, View, Develop, Edit, and Online the current choices. Previously Develop and Edit were combined within the Process mode.

I mostly like ACDSee's mode options, especially splitting the manage and view modes, though I think a more generic output mode that included Print, rather than just online, would be preferable. And Lightroom outdoes ACDSee in the modes department by letting the user choose which modes should be available; that way if you, for example, never print photos, you can remove the Print mode.

Aside from this mode lock-in, the application's interface is very flexible: You can undock any panel so that it floats freely on your desktop, customize toolbars, and view in full screen.? It also makes extensive use of keyboard shortcuts for quick operation. You can change the photo background shade from the default dark gray, but not the overall interface from that same shade. Reset icons are everywhere, so if you goof, it's a cinch to get back.

Inside Vancouver's Arts and Entertainment: The Vancouver Recital ...

Concert Pianist Behzod Abduraimov, Photo Credit: vancrecital.com

The Vancouver Recital Society (VRS) carefully crafts seasons of recitals that provide variety, entertainment and an undeniable high calibre of talent. ?Whether it?s a young, fiery-fingered concert pianist, or a seasoned veteran of the violin, the VRS celebrates and showcases performances fit for music lovers of all types.

Going to a VRS concert might seem a little intimidating. ?Sitting in a concert hall surrounded by chamber music admirers and watching a single performer illuminated by a spotlight might make you afraid to cough or even switch leg positions. ?Not the case at a VRS performance.

If you?ve never been to a recital or chamber music performance, a concert with the VRS is a great place to start. ?The artists play at a few of the best venues in the city: the Orpheum Theatre, the Vancouver Playhouse and the Chan Centre for Performing Arts. ?It?s also a great feeling be in such a vibrant atmosphere full of people excited about music.

To make recitals and chamber music more accessible to a younger audience, the VRS has the?Ru35?program. ?Anyone between the ages of 18 and 35 can check out a VRS performance for just $18. ?They don?t make you wear an evening gown or a tuxedo, or give you seats in the nosebleed section, they don?t limit what kind of performance you can attend, and you don?t have to go by yourself ? you can bring a guest of any age.

VRS also has a?Youth Club?which reaches out to an even younger audience and caters to students between grades 1 and 12. ?The club is a great way for music students and kids to get excited and discover new music.

Their next show is on November 25th at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts and features Stephen Hough, a concert pianist. ?They have several upcoming concerts?that feature pianists, cellists and guitarists ? all ranging in age and experience, and are all crazy talented.

Keep an eye out when you?re strolling around Vancouver, hopping on the sky train or waiting for the bus. ?You might see a plain black poster board drawing attention to a shiny, heart-shaped brass instrument. ?That?s the VRS letting people know that they are passionate about sharing music in Vancouver.

To purchase tickets for the Stephen Hough show, or any of their other upcoming concerts, visit their website.

Rupert Murdoch sheds some News Corp shares

(Reuters) - News Corp Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch sold about $10 million of the company's Class A shares on November 20, according to a regulatory filing on Wednesday.

The sale of 418,631 Class A shares represent about 5 percent of Murdoch and his family's total Class A.

Murdoch and his family control News Corp through their ownership of about 40 percent of Class B voting shares.

Shares of News Corp, home to 20th Century Fox, Fox TV stations and the Wall Street Journal, have been on a tear up almost 50 percent year over year.

The company is preparing to separate its publishing and entertainment assets next year in a move to appease shareholders who have been pressing the company to shed its troubled newspaper business.

The stock closed down 0.7 percent at $23.82 on Wednesday.

Corey Feldman Says He's Been ?In Communications? About ...

Corey Feldman provided the voice of the semi-cartilaginous martial artist technophile called Donatello in the first and third live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films. I?m told that the fans think he did a great job, and that he?s as associated with the role as Peter Cullen is with Optimus Prime, for example.

If that?s the case, then giving Feldman a part in the upcoming Ninja Turtles picture could push against the general sense of fan unease that has greeted every new leak or piece of official info about the film.

Ever since producer Michael Bay revealed the new alien origins planned for the ?heroes in a halfshell,? the ?base have been up in arms. We then discovered that they won?t be teenagers either, and the foaming continued. Bay and co. should be desperate to turn this tide.

This bit of casting could really help them. It could be another Cullen-as-movie-Optimus moment.

So will it happen? Well, Feldman has told Movieweb that he?s been in ?communications? with Bay.?He said:

It?s kind of up in the air. I will say this much. Michael Bay and I have become social acquaintances. We have traded cell phone numbers. We have been in communication. I have let him know that I support the project. He has let me know that he is a fan of my work. Its kind of? we are communicating. I wouldn?t say there has been a formal offer, or anything like that. Its not even really going to be Michael Bay?s decision. It?s going to be the director of the film?s decision.

It?s an amusing quote because it sounds like there?s nothing to it at all until Feldman started talking about what hasn?t happened. ?I wouldn?t say there has been a formal offer? sounds so much more convincing than ?we have traded cell phone numbers.?

I suggest all other actors learn that as a technique and start putting it to work in generating some self publicity. ?I wouldn?t say that I?ve actually signed on for the role? seems to be the ideal manifestation of this trick.

Of course, Feldman and Bay might truly, honestly be best friends forever and the casting still not come to pass for whatever reason ? though I, personally, doubt it will be Jonathan Liebesman, the film?s director, who actually makes the casting decisions on this film.

And if this really will be the motion capture production we?re expecting, it seems a little less likely that there will be a separate performer for Donatello?s voice.?I guess they could get Feldman in to play the role on set. Perhaps. It?s not like they?re going to cast actual martial artists anyhow ? that element is bound to come down to fakery.

Last we heard about Ninja Turtles, pre-production had shut down but was expected to get rolling again once the studio considered the screenplay and budget more cost-effective. If that has happened already, it has happened on the quiet.

Incidentally, Movieweb have started a petition, not just for Corey Feldman?s casting, but to see the other three turtle roles cast the way they?d like it.

Which quite unexpectedly means giving the roles to?Blake Anderson,?Adam DeVine?and?Anders Holm?of Workaholics, a TV show I?ve read a little about but haven?t seen so much of one second of.

That?s how they want it. Myself, I don?t really have any strong feelings about the turtles themselves and would probably go through a massive audition process. But for Splinter? Easy.

Andy Serkis.
