It?s something you get to hear a lot when you?re cruising the waves on Facebook?or twitter: writers struggling to find their niche. What should a scribe write?

Back in the day, the advice was write what you know, but I?m not convinced that really applies these days. The current crop of zombie/vampire novels couldn?t possibly have been written by the living dead or genuine vampires surely? There would be issues around book signings and book launches, because vampires don?t like daylight, and as for interviews in TV studios, zombies wouldn?t last even a minute without trying to kill the interviewer. Good publicity maybe, but a nightmare for the publisher who is likely to face? huge compensation claims from the relatives.

As we all know, the boy wizard attending wizard school and engaging in combat with forces of darkness has already been done, so that can be crossed off the list.

Fifty Shades of Grey was a surprise success, and it came from nowhere, but it goes to show that sex sells, so if you?re planning on writing a story about an accountant, be sure to make that accountant as erotic as possible.

With a new James Bond film now in the cinemas, I wonder whether the world needs a new master spy. We?ve had the Mr Bean style spoofs but I reckon a new challenger is needed to topple Bond from the top of the spy story league. With austerity becoming a new mantra for the age, I wonder whether a Neighbourhood Watch?style vigilante might be a good move. A fellow who pesters his neighbours not to park their cars outside his house, and ends up in death struggles with the local newsagent over the size of his paper bill. Who drives around in a clapped out Nissan Micra rather than an Aston Martin, which would make a movie adaptation much more economical.

Times are hard.
