Apple has begun selling the iPad 4 and iPad mini around the world, and while crowds have been much, much smaller than iPhone launches, which stands to reason, they've also been smaller than previous iPad launches. This is Apple's second full-size iPad launch of the year, however, and pre-orders have taken a lot of wind out of in-store, launch day crowds.
I lined up in the middle of the cold (39 degree F), rainy, Montreal night anyway, because that's what I do. There were 2 of us until about 7:30am, when the line had grown to about 20 people. The Apple Store staff handed out vouchers. Only the Wi-Fi models were available (cellular will follow in a few weeks). There were also no 32GB iPad mini in white, but all the other models were in stock. They didn't even bother handing out vouchers for the iPad 4; they had plenty of stock.
Starbucks coffee was served, the store opened at 8am, and most of us were done by 8:20.
I'll be following up with the prerequisite unboxing and hardware tour videos soon. Based on trying the iPad mini out in the store, however, said hardware is almost certainly going to impress.
And to answer the inevitable question -- yes, I'm bothered by the lack of Retina display. However, Apple is still bound by the laws of physics and putting a 2048x1536 display at 7.9-inches and 326 ppi in an iPad mini would require so much backlight and power that it would make the iPad mini much thicker and heavier (look at how much thicker and heavier the Retina iPad 4 is) and that would defeat the entire purpose. (The Retina 4-inch Retina display in the iPod touch and iPhone 5 are "only" 1136x640 pixels by comparison.)
Apple will get Retina on the iPad mini one day, but it's absolutely better to start with thinner and lighter and work their way there.

By NAKUBIANA SHABONGO -
VICE-President Guy Scott?s wife, Charlotte, yesterday led more than 10 Cabinet ministers? spouses in cervical and breast cancer screening at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.
Mrs Scott urged Members of Parliament and the public in general, especially women, to raise awareness about cervical and breast cancer.
She said there was need for women to undergo breast and cervical cancer in their respective constituencies in order to prevent it or to encourage access to early treatment.
?Zambia is not only champions in football but in a lot of things such as fighting and addressing cancer and other real issues affecting people,? she said.
The screening was conducted at the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Research in Zambia within the UTH premises.
Mrs Scott said cancer was a life-threatening disease that needed to be addressed by every woman on a daily basis.
She called for concerted efforts among stakeholders in sensitising women and their partners on cervical cancer and other related diseases.
Centre for Infectious Diseases and Research in Zambia head of cervical cancer training and prevention, Sharon Kapambwe said Zambia had a high rate of women suffering from different cancers.
Dr Kapambwe said more than 90,000 women, of which 18 per cent came from Lusaka, were successfully screened for cervical cancer.
She said more people in rural areas still lacked screening facilities compared to those residing in urban areas.
Dr Kapambwe said Zambia currently had 17 sites in every province where people were free to access screening and treatment services. ?

There are many reasons to dislike the Electoral College: It gives a handful of states the lion?s share of campaign attention; it allows a candidate with fewer votes to win; it depresses voter turnout in ?safe? states; and it?s plain confusing. Now add this one: The electoral power of your vote depends on where you live.
The average electoral vote represents 436,000 people, but that number rises and falls per state depending on that state?s population over 18 years of age. (The map above shows the population 18 years and older per electoral vote by state.) The states with the fewest people per electoral vote, and therefore the highest ?vote power,? are Wyoming, Vermont, and North Dakota. In Wyoming, there are 143,000 people for each of its three electoral votes. The states with the weakest votes are New York, Florida, and California. These states each have around 500,000 people for each electoral vote.
In other words, one Wyoming voter has roughly the same vote power as four New York voters. (Mouse over the map and it will show you where your state ranks in voting power.)
Electoral votes are allocated to the states each decade to reflect population shifts, but every state is guaranteed three electoral votes before allocation kicks in, leaving the least populous states with the most disproportionate number of electoral votes and improving their vote power. That?s why the five states with the most vote power have only three electoral votes.
A state?s vote power also depends on how close the state is to an additional electoral vote. The closer it is, the higher the population per electoral vote. Although the math behind apportionment minimizes this factor, it still results in situations like this: Minnesota has 22,000 more people than Colorado and one more electoral vote, while Wisconsin has 33,000 more people than Minnesota and the same number of electoral votes.
?Vote power,? in the sense used here, doesn?t entirely describe the probability that your individual vote can decisively influence the outcome of the presidential election. To determine that, you also need to know how tight the election is in your state and nationwide. Although a vote in Washington, D.C. is the third most powerful, for example, the probability it will change the outcome of the election is incredibly low.
In the aggregate, though, vote-power disparity does change outcomes, yielding elections, such as the 2000 election, in which the winner is not the one with the highest popular vote. And because the Electoral College mirrors the allocation of representatives in Congress, this map also charts legislative power; 143,000 people in Wyoming have the same number of legislators in Congress as 500,000 in New York.

After some complaints were filed with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding Riverside County?s lack of Spanish-speaking poll workers, the county?s Registrar of Voters stepped up ? and the impact will be felt on Election Day.
Friday the DOJ announced that Riverside County is one of 17 jurisdictions nationwide that will see federal observers from its Civil Rights Division monitoring polling place activities to ensure there are no irregularities and that all voters have access to the ballot on Election Day.?
The only other California jurisdiction on the list of 17 was Alameda County.
DOJ personnel are also expected to monitor an additional 34 jurisdictions nationwide, but none are in California.
According to Art Tinoco, chief deputy director for the Riverside County of Registrar of Voters, the groups that filed complaints have not been disclosed to his office.
?The Department of Justice did not disclose that information to us,? Tinoco said.
DOJ spokeswoman Dena Iverson declined to release the specific information to Patch.
The process of improving access to the ballot box in Riverside County began in January 2010 when the county entered into an agreement with the DOJ promising it would meet 26 standards to ensure all citizens have access during federal elections, Tinoco said.
Among the 26 conditions was ensuring that bilingual poll workers are available at polling places that serve a high number of registered voters with Spanish surnames, Tinoco said. In total, the county had to bring on 1,095 bilingual poll workers for this Tuesday?s election or face a costly legal challenge from the DOJ, Tinoco explained.
At press time, the county is short by 13 bilingual poll workers, all in Southwest Riverside County, Tinoco said.
?There are a lot of families in that area and they work,? he said. ?They don?t have time to volunteer.?
[Are you bilingual and interested in helping out? Click here for more information.]
Tinoco stressed that any non-English-speaking registered voter should feel comfortable coming to the polls on Tuesday.
?If there?s anyone out there who needs assistance at the polls, we are there to help,? he said.
In the days leading up to and throughout Election Day, Civil Rights Division staff members will be available by telephone to receive complaints related to possible violations of the federal voting rights laws (toll free 1-800-253-3931 or 202-307-2767 or TTY 1-877-267-8971).?In addition, individuals may also report such complaints by fax to 202-307-3961, by email to voting.section@usdoj.gov and by a complaint form on the department?s website: www.justice.gov/crt/about/vote/.??

When a person uses the Internet, the very first tool that he uses is a search engine. This is why search engines are called the gateways to the Internet because potential customers look for the product or service that they need through these engines. This is also the reason why businesses feel the need to do search engine advertising to increase link popularity. This is imperative for their business, because there is no way that the website would get any potential visitor or sales if the customer does not find the website in any of the search results.
?
A link is very vital for a business. It can do a number of things. A business that wants to do some Internet marketing needs to be able to increase link popularity. Link popularity is the ranking assigned to a website by the search engines. A website establishes its ranking through its keywords. Your website should have competitive keywords that will help in locating your site. So that every time a keyword is entered in the search engine and the search is run, your website will appear. Anyway, there are no hard rules in choosing appropriate keywords for your website. You just have to be able to provide some relevant and updated contents of the pages that are related to your link. Doing this will improve the ranking of your website in the page rank of the search engine and eventually will increase link popularity. This will in turn generate more traffic into your website.?
?
One way to increase link popularity is through search engine advertising. In the last couple of years, it has become integral to start online ad campaigns of this form in order to attract businesses. Although it is still but a newcomer, businesses have proven this to be effective in generating sales. Search engine advertising has become a widely used medium in online marketing. Businesses that are still into traditional campaigns are already losing their market share against those that have already been doing this online campaign.
?
The reason why people choose search engine advertising is because people today are more glued to their computers. If they need anything, they would just run a search and voila these things appear. Search engine advertising is cost effective and it has its way of achieving results. The only thing that the business has to be mindful about is gather relevant keywords in order to lead the search into the website. This is what is called technically as search engine optimization or SEO.?
?
There are SEO experts who specialize in doing this for your website. Not only will it optimize search results, but it will also let you achieve a high ranking in search engine results. What they would do is to design your website around the information that is naturally sought by search engine spiders and having meta tags around your webpage in order to draw the search into your website. Pound up your site with these relevant keywords and surely, a search result of this keyword would be retrieved by the search engine and will finally increase link popularity.
?

The San Diego Chargers scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, including two defensive touchdowns, to cruise to a 31-13 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
With Norv Turner?s job security incredibly tenuous entering the game, the Chargers found themselves holding on to a 10-6 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers connected with Malcolm Floyd from 13 yards out to give the Chargers a 17-6 edge with just over 11 minutes to play.
Then the defense put the game away.
On the ensuing possession, Jarret Johnson stripped Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel in the endzone and Shaun Phillips recovered for another Chargers touchdown.
Cassel then watched a pass bounce off the hands of running back Dexter McCluster straight into the arms of linebacker Demorrio Williams that was returned 59 yards for a score as San Diego all of a sudden had a 31-6 lead on their way to getting back to .500 at 4-4.
The Chiefs find themselves at 1-7 and have now played eight full games and have yet to hold a lead at any point this season. Their only victory came on the final play of overtime against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3 when Succop hit a 31-yard game-winning field goal.
The Chargers offense came out firing against the Chiefs as Rivers led San Diego on a seven-play, 84-yard drive culminating in a 14-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Gates to quickly jump on top 7-0.
Rivers was nearly perfect in the first half starting the game 14 of 14 for 179 yards and a touchdown. But with the Chargers threatening in the redzone inside the final minute of the half, Rivers threw a pass away and then was intercepted by safety Eric Berry to keep it just a one-possession game going to the break.
As has been the case all season for Kansas City, they failed to take advantage. Ryan Succop saw his string of 14 straight field goals made come to an end with a missed 39-yard try in the third quarter. Succop did convert from 41 yards out to make it a 10-6 game headed to the fourth quarter, but the Chiefs couldn?t get out of their own way. The Chiefs turned the ball over four times on the night and are dead last in the league with 29 turnovers on the year. The Dallas Cowboys are next on the list with 19.
Rivers finished 18 of 20 for 220 yards and two touchdowns with an interception.
Cassel actually managed the game well and had the Chiefs in striking distance before the Chargers capitalized on Kansas City mistakes. Cassel was 19 of 29 for 181 yards and an interception on the night.
The Chargers travel to Tampa Bay next week while the Chiefs head to Pittsburgh.
