"Sherlock Holmes" surpasses $100 million domestically (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The world's most famous detective is uncovering money at the box office.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" quietly surpassed the $100 million mark domestically Wednesday.

Its total is $106,674,000 in North America, and $49 million internationally. The PG-13 adventure sequel from Warner Bros. is the first film of the holiday season to hit $100 million domestically and continues to be the highest-grossing domestic movie of December.

Paramount/Skydance's "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" had grossed about $86.2 domestically million as of Tuesday. Worldwide, that picture is a monster, grossing about $170 million internationally, for a total of more than $256 million.

"Sherlock" is behind the 2009 "Sherlock Holmes," which grossed more than $100 million in its first week of release. That movie went on to gross $109 million domestically and $315 million internationally.

But the sequel's performance going into its third week is impressive, and Warner Bros. expects Guy Ritchie's movie to continue to post strong numbers through the New Years weekend. The movie stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.

"Sherlock" underperformed in its first weekend. It opened in first place, but with $39.6 million. At the time, Warner Bros. predicted that the movie, which cost about $125 million to make, would have a long play.

The prediction is proving accurate.

"Sherlock Holmes" is Warner's fifth movie to cross $100 million in the domestic marketplace. The others are "The Hangover Part II," which grossed $245 million, "Green Lantern," which took $116 million, "Horrible Bosses," which grossed $117 million an "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2," which grossed $381 million.

A car with character: The small, stylish Fiat 500 has a personality big enough for Texas

Like the Eames Lounge Chair?and the Helvetica typeface, the original Fiat 500 remains a revered icon of a mid-century design. Produced from 1957-1975, the stylish, affordable, and smartly packaged rear-engined automobile became enormously popular in Europe.?

Fifty years after the original, a modernized 500 has debuted. It has grown by about 20 inches in length, is filled with features and amenities, and has had the European charm dialed up to 11. Now, retooled for North America, the Fiat 500 has arrived on our shores. It brings with it not just affordable Italian style, but a thoroughly European idea: a spacious, well-equipped, premum subcompact car. Can it catch on in Texas?

The 500 ('Cinquecento,' if you prefer) follows the "cute and retro" direction led by the revived Mini Cooper in the early 2000s. In fact, it was overseen by Frank Stephenson, head of Fiat's design studio at the time, and the same man responsible for the Mini. This car is smaller and has a character all its own.

The wheels-pushed-to-the-corners look give the 500 a suprisingly sporty stance.

Activating the 'Sport' on the dash changes the power steering assist and the throttle response. The normally super-light steering becomes heavily weighted, and the transmission shifts at higher RPMs.?

The Fiat 500 debuted in 2007 in Europe to much fanfare as an alternative to the similarly retro Mini and Volkswagen New Beetle. The 500 that arrived in 2011 has been thoroughly reworked and is built by Chrysler in Mexico. Changes include exterior differences, a larger fuel tank, bigger brakes, changes to the headlights, increased body strength, upgraded seats, steering wheel controls and more. You get a sense that designers have done done their homework adapting the 500 for U.S. buyers' needs.?

The North American 500 has 1.4-liter 101-horsepower Multiair engine produced in Dundee, Mich. It's not a lot, but this car reenforces that you don't need gobs of horsepower to have fun. Weighing in at under 2,400 pounds helps, too.

?

The "500" logo seems to be etched and enameled in crevasses all over the car. Fortunately, the "500" logo is incredibly cool.

The 500c ("C" stands for cabrio") has a dual-layer power retractable cloth top that slides straight back at the push of a button. With the top up it feels just like a regular hard top, with no additional noise or compromises. It can also retract to a partial-open setting that becomes like a large sunroof.?

?

One of the best aspects of the 500 is the visibility to the outside. You sit high, perched atop tall seats with wide glass openings all around. Despite the smaller footprint than the Mini, the 500 is taller, so there's plenty of headroom for six-footers, even in the back seats.?

The optional TomTom Navigation seems to be just a third-party navgation device that you clumsily shove into a hole on the top of the dashboard. It's inelegant, and worse, inconvenient, because you have to stow it away in the dashboard every time you park. It looks like a detachable magnet for thieves.?

The volume and skip controls for the sterio are shaped like sections of a pie, no doubt designed with symmetry in mind. The problem with volume buttons, unlike a knob, is that you have to look at the buttons every time to adjust the volume.?

The concentric-circle gauge cluster is a design flourish that's aesthetically pleasing but still functional. For the driver, it's a constant reminder that you're driving something a little bit special.

The big, central gear selector is plastickey and feels somewhat rattly when slotting from one gear into the next. ?

?

We sampled the six-speed automatic, although we tried briefly the available five-speed manual transmission last spring. ?The automatic transmission is only offered for North America, with it the estimated fuel economy takes a hit: 27 mpg city/34 highway as opposed to the manual's 30/38. The automatic drives smoothly, but isn't the liveliest automatic we've driven.?

Soft suspension and gentle body roll are part of the character of the 500, and help make it so comfortable on harsh roads.?

The 500 is spacious inside; the only hint that you're in a tiny car comes from the narrowness and the closeness between the driver and passenger seats.

The 500 seems to come alive making mundane trips around town, and this is its greatest strength. It makes the uneventful trips on Houston's awful roads a joy, and it seems to bound along with endless enthusiasm. The cushy tires and soft suspension soak up even the worst potholes (trust us) and grossly uneven concrete slabs without issue. ?You can wind up the engine without exceeding the local speed limits, and you can fit the car almost anywhere. Great outward visibility and short overhangs help create the sense of uninhibited mobility. ?

?

In the city, you can sense that you're having more fun than the guy in the sedan next to you. ?

The price for our tester ? a fully-equipped 500c Lounge with almost every option ? was around $26,000. Hardtop models without as many boxes ticked start at under $16,000.

Any piece of design is only as good as its functionality. Luckily, the Fiat 500 doesn't disappoint, and it's as fun in everyday commuting as it is to look at. Living with it gives you a sense of occasion that's hard to come by in any price range, and that far outweighs a few [authentically Italian] quirks on the inside. The Fiat 500 stands out as a car that drives with its own character, while looking like a Cars 2 character.?

?

This modern 500 could be on its way to being a classic like its forebearer.?

I only have a few more months here. ?

My uncle?s baseball team is playing in a tournament in Chicago on March 31. ?Do you want to get lunch? he asked over Christmas. ?That?s my last day in my apartment. ?By then I?ll be living out of a suitcase. I?ll have a one way plane ticket. ORD-LGA.

But sure, lunch sounds fine. ?I can?t imagine where my head will be at that time. I don?t have family here, so when they visit, the city feels a little bit more like a place where I have real roots.

I?ve lived in this city since 2005, in this apartment since 2006. ?I?ve permeated this place; I have too many things. ?Rather than put everything into storage, I?m just going to leave my door unlocked for all of February and March and invite people to rob me via neon tagboard signs posted at high traffic local intersections. ?ROBBABLE APARTMENT. Take my couch, my kitchen table, my pans, my zester, my coat tree. ?Take the 15 hoodies that say NOTRE DAME on them that I no longer wear. ?Take the pointy toed business shoes and the desk covered with crap and the lamp and the empty wall sconce. ?Just fucking take it. ?I don?t want to deal with it anymore.

My mother is coming in the middle of March to take my cat, the kitchen table, the chairs. ?

Having a lot of stuff makes you feel heavy.

Coloradans can make money by losing weight

(AP) ? Insurance company Kaiser Permanente Colorado is offering cash to Coloradans to lose weight and keep it off.

Companies have been making similar offers to their employees for years as a way to reduce obesity in the workplace and lower health costs, but Kaiser is taking it one step further and making the offer to any adult in Colorado.

It's one of the first programs in the nation to make such an offer to all adults.

Participants in the "Weigh and Win" program earn anywhere from $15 to $150 every three months to lose weight and keep it off.

Twelve kiosks with scales and a video camera to record progress are located in medical facilities, recreation centers, libraries and even a furniture store throughout the state.

The insurer is spending $500,000 to help jump start the program, which it hopes will eventually be funded by the cities and other health care groups that it's working with.

Kaiser hopes to expand Weigh and Win by adding 10 kiosks next year as part of its community outreach programs.

"Weight loss is as effective as mammograms, or colon cancer screenings or blood pressure control when you speak about the amount of dollars you spend for the life years you gain from the program," said Dr. Eric France, who's in charge of developing the program at the insurer.

"And from the medical perspective, losing about 5 percent body weight is considered valuable and helpful," said France, Kaiser's chief of population care and prevention services.

About 8,900 Coloradans have signed up since the program began in April. The average weight loss has been about 12 pounds.

Tanya Amaro, a pediatrics nurse practitioner at Denver Health Medical Center, checks in every week at the kiosk in the hospital's cafeteria. She began her quest to lose weight last November, losing about 27 pounds on her own, and found that she couldn't lose any more. She has lost an additional 37 pounds through the program, earning her $75 since May.

"It's pretty cool," she said.

She found the grocery store shopping lists; recipes for low-fat, healthy meals; and a workout regime from a personal trainer assigned to her through the program helpful in breaking through the plateau she had reached.

"Not just that I need to walk or I need to run. I knew that stuff, you know, that's commonsense stuff," she said. "It actually tells you how to do it, when to do it. You get text messages on your phone."

France said it's difficult to put a dollar amount on the benefits the program may bring.

"It's not really a medical solution to obesity problems, the obesity epidemic," France said. "It has to be a community solution. It's about access to good food, it's access to places to exercise, places to ride your bicycle, use transit, policies at school, policies at work and opportunities to have supportive programs to help you lose weight."

Affordable Care? New Obamacare Fee Coming to Health Insurance ...

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Starting in 2012, the government will charge a new fee to your health insurance plan for research to find out which drugs, medical procedures, tests and treatments work best. But what will Americans do with the answers?

The goal of the research, part of a little-known provision of President Barack Obama?s health care law, is to answer such basic questions as whether that new prescription drug advertised on TV really works better than an old generic costing much less.

But in the politically charged environment surrounding health care, the idea of medical effectiveness research is eyed with suspicion. The insurance fee could be branded a tax and drawn into the vortex of election-year politics.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute ? a quasi-governmental agency created by Congress to carry out the research ? has yet to commission a single head-to-head comparison, although its director is anxious to begin.

The government is already providing the institute with some funding: The $1-per-person insurance fee goes into effect in 2012. But the Treasury Department says it?s not likely to be collected for another year, though insurers would still owe the money. The fee doubles to $2 per covered person in its second year and thereafter rises with inflation. The IRS is expected to issue guidance to insurers within the next six months.

?The more concerning thing is not the institute itself, but how the findings will be used in other areas,? said Kathryn Nix, a policy analyst for the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank. ?Will they be used to make coverage determinations??

The institute?s director, Dr. Joe Selby, said patients and doctors will make the decisions, not his organization.

?We are not a policy-making body; our role is to make the evidence available,? said Selby, a primary care physician and medical researcher,

But insurance industry representatives say they expect to use the research and work with employers to fine-tune workplace health plans. Employees and family members could be steered to hospitals and doctors who follow the most effective treatment methods. Patients going elsewhere could face higher copayments, similar to added charges they now pay for ?non-preferred? drugs on their insurance plans.

Major insurers already are carrying out their own effectiveness research, but it lacks the credibility of government-sponsored studies.

Not long ago, so-called ?comparative effectiveness? research enjoyed support from lawmakers in both parties. After all, much of the medical research that doctors and consumers rely on now is financed by drug companies and medical device manufacturers, who have a built-in interest in the findings. And a drug maker only has to show that a new medicine is more effective than a sugar pill ? not a competing medication ? to win government approval for marketing.

The 2009 economic stimulus bill included $1.1 billion for medical effectiveness research, mainly through the National Institutes of Health. It was not considered particularly controversial. But things changed during the congressional health care debate, after former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin made the claim, now widely debunked, that Obama and the Democrats were setting up ?death panels? to ration care.

As a result, lawmakers hedged the new institute with caveats. It was set up as an independent nonprofit organization, with a .org Internet address instead of .gov. The government cannot dictate Selby?s research agenda. And there are limitations on how the Health and Human Services department can use the research findings in decisions that affect Medicare and Medicaid.

Selby says the institute is taking seriously the term ?patient-centered? in its name. Patients will not be merely subjects of research; they and their representatives will be involved in setting the agenda and overseeing the process.

?We are talking about patients as partners in the research,? said Selby. Findings will be presented in clear language ? a kind of Consumer Reports approach ? so that patients and doctors can easily draw on them to make decisions.

?Our goal, our hope, is that over time, by involving patients in research, two things will happen,? said Selby. ?One is that we will start asking questions in a more practical fashion, so the results would speak more consistently to questions that patients want to know the answers to. And two is that, by our example of involving patients in the research, trust will rise.? He expects to unveil the institute?s proposed research agenda in the next few weeks.

Former Medicare administrator Gail Wilensky says that agenda should focus on high-cost procedures and drugs on which the medical community has not developed a consensus, and which have widely different patterns of use around the country. A Republican, Wilensky believes opposition to the institute?s work is shortsighted.

?This just strikes me as a component of finding ways to treat better and spend smarter,? she said.

Italy probes report that Colosseum stones fall

Italy's culture ministry is investigating reports that bits of rock have fallen from the Colosseum.

Witnesses reported seeing the fallen masonry Sunday. Italian news agency ANSA reported another bit fell Tuesday, but Colosseum director Rossella Rea denied it and blamed the false report on a "psychosis" that occurs every so often that Rome's iconic stadium is crumbling.

(AP Photo/Karl B DeBlaker, File)

(AP) ? After spending a few seasons overhauling the roster, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke was finally satisfied with how his team looked at last season's All-Star break.

The Maple Leafs have returned to respectability in the Eastern Conference since then, and Burke rewarded Ron Wilson for the turnaround, confirming Monday that the veteran coach has signed a contract extension.

"This coach has earned this extension," Burke said. "It's not charity, it's not a gift."

The Maple Leafs have not made the playoffs in three seasons under Wilson, who is 119-120-42 overall with Toronto, but the team appears to be on track to change that this season.

Entering Monday night's games, the Leafs were sixth in the East with 40 points. Wilson has also guided the club to a 36-22-10 record since the middle of the last season.

"It's pretty impressive, it's certainly a healthy clip," Burke said.

Burke confirmed the deal during the second intermission of Monday's AHL game between the Toronto Marlies and the Hamilton Bulldogs at Air Canada Centre. He did not reveal contract details.

The 56-year-old Wilson was in the final season of a four-year deal.

"When the coach goes into the cage, he needs the chair and the whip ? not just one," Burke said. "It's not enough to just be the coach for the rest of the season, in my opinion.

"So I think it's an important statement. I think there's a respect level involved and I think it was the right thing to do."

Wilson tweeted a day earlier that he got his wish of a new deal. He had hinted last week that he wanted a new contract from Santa Claus for Christmas.

"'He came! He came!' Remember saying that as a little kid? Well he did: I got a new Red Ryder BB gun and a contract extension!" Wilson posted Sunday on his Twitter account.

Wilson said the quest for results remains just as high, even with the increased contract security.

"I've seen lots of coaches get fired this year with lots of (contract) term left, so the pressure doesn't change," he said after the Leafs practiced Monday. "It's still the same. I could get fired next week for all I know. So I have a little bit of combat pay coming in other words.

"That's kind of the way I look at it."

Burke said he worked out the deal with Wilson about three or four weeks ago. The GM added it was up to Wilson when he wanted to make the news public.

"Ron elected to release it in the last couple of days and that's fine with me," Burke said.

Wilson has also coached in Anaheim, Washington and San Jose. Over 18 seasons, he has a career record of 637-546 with 101 ties and 88 overtime losses.

"He hasn't been out of work very long," Burke said. "There's a reason for that. The hockey community believes in this guy."

While Wilson has yet to win a Stanley Cup as a coach, Burke feels he has Hall-of-Fame credentials.

"Ron Wilson is in the top 10 in every category in the history of the league in terms of coaching," Burke said.

Fans have had a mixed view of Wilson's performance since his arrival in Toronto.

His future is regularly debated on sports-talk radio in the hockey-mad city. Chants of "Fire Wilson" have also been heard at Air Canada Centre over the years with the Leafs failing to reach the postseason.

However, Burke said there are usually clear signs when it's time to make a coaching change and he hasn't seen them.

"You have agents calling you and complaining that the players don't like the coach and aren't going to play for him," Burke said. "You have what we call snipers ? unnamed players taking shots ? and there has been none of that since I've been here.

"In fact, I had players come to me last year telling me, 'Don't change the coach.' So it hasn't been nearly as big an issue or a debate as it's been outside the room or outside of our organization."

Toddler shoots 5-year-old to death near Denver (Reuters)

DENVER (Reuters) ? A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed a 5-year-old child in suburban Denver, and a man visiting from Kansas is under arrest on suspicion of child abuse in connection with the tragedy, police said on Saturday.

Police in Lakewood, Colorado were summoned to an apartment building Friday by reports of a shooting and found the 5-year-old with a gunshot wound to the chest, police spokeswoman Bonnie Martin said in a written release.

The child, whose gender was not disclosed, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, Martin said.

Adam Dean Laham, 23, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death and criminal negligence.

Martin described Laham as a "family friend" from Kansas who was staying at the home where the shooting occurred, but she released few other details except that the gunfire was an accident.

Police do not believe Laham was related to either child, and it was not disclosed whether the two children were related to each other.

Laham was jailed in lieu of $40,000 bond, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Video: Enzyme that flips switch on cells' sugar cravings could be anti-cancer target

Video: Enzyme that flips switch on cells' sugar cravings could be anti-cancer target

Thursday, December 22, 2011

Cancer cells tend to take up more glucose than healthy cells, and researchers are increasingly interested in exploiting this tendency with drugs that target cancer cells' altered metabolism.

Cancer cells' sugar cravings arise partly because they turn off their mitochondria, power sources that burn glucose efficiently, in favor of a more inefficient mode of using glucose. They benefit because the byproducts can be used as building blocks for fast-growing cells.

Scientists at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University have shown that many types of cancer cells flip a switch that diverts glucose away from mitochondria. Their findings suggest that tyrosine kinases, enzymes that drive the growth of several types of cancer, play a greater role in mitochondria than previously recognized.

The results also highlight the enzyme PDHK (pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase) as an important point of control for cancer cell metabolism.

"We and others have shown that PDHK is upregulated in several types of human cancer, and our findings demonstrate a new way that PDHK activity is enhanced in cancer cells," says Jing Chen, PhD, associate professor of hematology and medical oncology at Emory University School of Medicine and Winship Cancer Institute. "PDHK is a very attractive target for anticancer therapy because of its role in regulating cancer metabolism."

Chen and Sumin Kang, PhD, assistant professor of hematology and medical oncology at Emory University School of Medicine, are co-corresponding authors. Postdoctoral fellows Taro Hitosugi, Jun Fan and Tae-Wook Chung are co-first authors of the paper. Co-authors at Emory include Georgia Chen, PhD, Sagar Lonial, MD, Haian Fu, PhD, and Fadlo Khuri, MD. Collaborators at Yale University, Novartis and Cell Signaling Technology contributed to the paper.

Chen and his colleagues started out studying the tyrosine kinase FGFR1, which is activated in several types of cancer. Tyrosine kinases attach a phosphate to other proteins, making them more or less active. They found that FGFR1 activates the enzyme PDHK, which has a gatekeeper function for mitochondria.

"We used FGFR1 as a platform to look at how metabolic enzymes are modified by oncogenic tyrosine kinases," Chen says. "We discovered that several oncogenic tyrosine kinases activate PDHK, and we found that many of those tyrosine kinases are found within mitochondria."

This was a surprise because tyrosine kinases are usually thought to drive growth by being active next to the cell membrane, Chen says.

Introducing a form of PDHK that is insensitive to tyrosine kinases into human cancer cells forces the cells to grow more slowly and form smaller tumors in mice, they found. This indicates that PDHK could be a target for drugs that specifically target cancer cells' altered metabolism.

The experimental drug dichloroacetate (DCA), which inactivates PDHK, is being used in new clinical trials for cancer. Chen is collaborating with Haian Fu, professor of pharmacology and director of the Emory Chemical Biology Discovery Center, to find other, more potent inhibitors of PDHK.

Rosneft passes ExxonMobil to become world's top oil producer

Russia's state-run Rosneft oil company has become the world's largest producer after surpassing U.S. giant ExxonMobil, Voice of Russia radio reported Thursday (Dec. 22). The difference in their volumes of production is about 1 million tons, a small amount compared with their total production. Not only is the Russian company planning to preserve its position, it also intends to improve its key indicators.

Rosneft boasts oil production facilities in northern Russia, Siberia and the Far East, as well as seven refineries. Since 2004, it has been working at the world's largest oil deposits. In the past nine months, it has produced almost 90 million metric tons of oil, leaving the American company behind. At the same time, Rosneft has huge potential, said Natalya Shulyar, an expert in the fuel and energy sector.

"Considering that Russia is the world's largest oil producer, it's no surprise that Rosneft has reached the world's top position in production. The company is developing fast and is investing in new projects, that's why, it has good prospects," Shulyar said.

Rosneft projects include development of offshore oil fields and of the Vankor oil and gas field in East Siberia. The oil extracted from the Vankor field will fill the East Siberia-Pacific oil pipeline. Moreover, the company is involved in developing the Carabobo-2 oil field in Venezuela.

Despite its success in oil production the Russian company's overall production of hydrocarbons is half the amount extracted by its main competitor, ExxonMobil. Rosneft has set itself a target to improve its performance in other key areas by 2012 -- the production of natural gas and gas condensate. To this end, it needs to concentrate on expanding into new regions, an expert in energy issues, Sergei Pikin, told Voice of Russia in an interview.

"Unlike all the Russian oil and gas companies, ExxonMobil is a multinational company," Pikin said. "Consequently, the potential for Rosneft's development lies in the diversification of its regions of operation, which will help expand the resource base and bring it closer to major oil-consuming centers. This model would help the company to receive additional preferences."

Rosneft and ExxonMobil are partners as well as competitors. A few months ago, the companies agreed to conduct joint exploration of oil fields in the Arctic, while at the same time Russia will get an opportunity to extract oil from U.S. oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico and in Texas.

DBS Finds Few Winners In Chinese Insurance Market

By Chris Aylott

Macroeconomic headwinds have chilled DBS Group?s forecast for the Chinese insurance market, but underdog Ping An (PNGAY.PK) may be a good buy for adventurous investors.

Analyst Ping Cheng has assigned a ?neutral? rating to the sector, citing China?s high benchmark interest rate and an underwhelming equity market. Cheng projects low double-digit growth for insurance in 2012, which would be good news anywhere but China.

Cheng says life insurance lost its growth engine when regulatory changes affected insurers? use of Chinese banks as a distribution platform. ?Bancassurance? contributed 80% of China Life (LFC) and China Pacific?s new business in 2010.

Insurers are building an agency-based sales channel, but so far this only offsets some of the volume loss from banks. Recruiting agents is difficult in China?s busy job market, and insurers are still mastering the operational systems needed for high agent productivity.

Cheng identifies Ping An Insurance as ?ahead of the competition? in transitioning to agency distribution and integrated systems. Ping An is Cheng?s top pick, with a projected 23% upside.

Ping An is mostly traded in Hong Kong ? PNGAY is not always going to be extremely liquid.

But since it is not a major component of Global X?s China Financials ETF (CHIX), U.S. investors looking for a toehold in the Chinese insurance market may want to look at these over-the-counter shares after all.

Phiaton PS 20 BT

Bluetooth audio has come a long way in the last year: It's now possible to stream audio from your phone to a stereo headset and actually enjoy the music stream, not merely hear it. One issue with Bluetooth and headphones in the past, aside from sometimes sounding like a low bit-rate MP3, was a lack of low frequency response?deep bass or even low-mids never had much punch or fullness.

Phiaton's PS 20 BT stereo earphones are a testament to how far wireless Bluetooth audio transmission has come. Tracks with deep bass sound robust and don't distort, even at high volumes. The overall frequency response is bright and articulate, with minimal Bluetooth artifacts. The design of the control pod is a bit bulky, and the only way to charge the headset is via USB; no charger is included. Still, at $149 list, the PS 20 BT delivers audio that, while not flawless, definitely justifies the price.

Design
The Phiaton PS 20 BT is all black, with a short cable that terminates in the control pod, which clips onto a shirt or jacket. At 0.6 ounces, the earphones feel lightweight and seal off the ear canal securely, but clipping the compartment to a shirt is necessary or the earpieces will tug at the ears a bit. This is a minor annoyance, because not only is it not always easy to clip the compartment onto every outfit, but if your outer layer lacks pockets or buttons, like a t-shirt, your only option is to clip it onto your collar, which can feel awkward and bulky. It also means you can't see the buttons on the control pod. They aren't quite as intuitive as the Apple-style in-line controls so many headphones now incorporate, but they are not overly complex, either. Phiaton PS 20 BT in-line image

The egg-shaped control pod measures roughly 2 by 1.3 by 0.7 inches (HWD). There's a large clip on the back. The front face is dominated by a joystick-like control button that, when pressed, controls Play/Pause function, and when pushed up, down, left, or right, controls Volume and track navigation. The microphone and LED status indicator are also situated on the front of the pod. A button with a Phone icon etched on it handles answering and ending calls?it sits above a smaller Power button on the left-hand side of the pod. The right side houses the micro USB connection for charging. The PS 20 BT charges via an included USB cable, but it does not ship with a charger. Instead, it takes its power from your computer's USB port, which isn't terribly convenient if you need to charge away from your office or laptop. Below the USB connection is the Hold button. A black cloth carrying pouch and four pairs of eartips in different sizes are also included with the earphones.

The PS 20 BT supports Bluetooth A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, and HSP. Phiaton rates the rechargeable lithium battery life at 6 hours for music playback and 250 hours for standby mode.

Performance
To pair the device with your phone, make sure to enable Bluetooth on it, then power up the PS 20 BT and hold down the Power button and the Hold button simultaneously until a the blue LED blinks slowly and your Bluetooth device acknowledges that the two are paired. It took less than five seconds on our first try to pair with an Apple iPhone 4S. Phiaton rates the wireless range at roughly 32 feet; our own tests yielded a range of roughly 30 feet before the signal was interrupted.

Phone calls sound relatively clear, though mobile call clarity, particularly with the iPhone, is never a strong suit. Regardless, conversations were intelligible on both ends, and integration with the iPhone, at least, was flawless. Music pauses and resumes without a hitch when calls are made and ended. In terms of extra features, there pretty much are none. This is Bluetooth for music lovers.

Even so, Bluetooth is not quite audiophile-level yet. When artifacts are audible, it's usually a bit of a crackle in the high frequencies?not distortion, as it can happen at just about any volume level, but a slightly static-like sound that nonetheless resembles minor distortion. However, that is a transmission issue, and not from the earphones being overdriven. In fact, on challenging tracks with deep bass, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," we encountered no distortion of the bass frequencies, even at maximum volume. That's impressive enough for a standard pair of earphones, but the fact that a Bluetooth headset can not only deliver the deep bass response at all, but also do so without distorting, speaks volumes about Bluetooth's progress as an audio medium.

The PS 20 BT's overall frequency response is a bit on the bright side, which sometimes brings out those occasional artifacts more than it has to. But the earphones are articulate, not harsh, when playing classical pieces like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances" or vocals-driven efforts like Bill Callahan's album, Apocalypse. The strings and deeper percussion in both Adams' music and Callahan's benefit from the capable low frequency response, which helps balance out the strong high frequency presence.

Conclusions
The pricing for the PS 20 BT is identical to the Phiaton PS 20 NC ($149, 4 stars), which is a wired, noise-canceling model with very similar frequency response. Obviously the differences between the two in the audio realm come from one streaming content wirelessly while the other takes the output from a headphone jack, which, at least for now, still offers better overall audio performance.

If you're looking for a more premium wireless option, Sennheiser makes a several models that incorporate Kleer wireless technology. However, these are mostly intended for home theater use, are quite expensive, and generally lack phone controls. Still, if that's what you're after, check out the Sennheiser MX W1 (3.5 stars) and keep your eyes peeled in early 2012 for the RS 220, which will use a new, lossless variation on Kleer wireless stream.

If an excellent, highly functional stereo Bluetooth headset is your primary concern, our current Editors' Choice is the affordable, multi-feature Samsung Modus HM6450 ($99, 4 stars). If music is your primary concern, however, Phiaton has you covered. Aside from the design, which isn't very user-friendly for t-shirt or sweater wearers, the PS 20 BT is easy to recommend: It offers the audio performance you'd expect in this price range, even from some wired pairs, and it is simple to operate.

(AP) ? The Senate passed legislation Saturday extending a Social Security payroll tax cut and jobless benefits for just two months, handing President Barack Obama a partial victory while setting the stage for another fight in February.

It also brought a peaceful end to a year-long battle over spending by passing a $1 trillion-plus catchall budget bill that wraps together the day-to-day budgets for 10 Cabinet departments and military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The House passed the measure Friday, and the White House has signaled that Obama will sign it.

The renewal of the 2-percentage-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax for 160 million workers and unemployment benefits averaging about $300 a week for the additional millions of people who have been out of work for six months or more is a modest step forward for Obama's year-end jobs agenda.

As a condition for GOP support of the payroll tax measure, Obama has to accept a provision that forces him to decide within 60 days whether to approve or reject a proposed a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline that promises thousands of jobs.

Obama didn't reference the pipeline issue in a brief appearance at the White House after the vote. He welcomed the Senate's passage of the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance extension and said it would be "inexcusable" for Congress not to extend them for the rest of 2012 when lawmakers return from their holiday break.

The budget bill, passed 67-32, heads to the White House for Obama's signature; the payroll tax measure won a 89-10 tally that send it back to the House ? where many Republicans only reluctantly support it ? for a vote early next week.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, would not predict whether the House would accept the Senate payroll tax measure, saying GOP leaders would have to discuss it with the rank and file. But Democrats assume Senate Republicans would not have allowed the short-term measure to advance without a signal from Boehner that the House would go along.

Democratic and GOP leaders opted for the short-term extension of the payroll tax and jobless benefits measure after failing to agree on big enough spending cuts to pay for a full-year renewal. The measure also provides a 60-day reprieve from a scheduled 27 percent cut in the fees paid to doctors who treat Medicare patients.

The $33 billion cost of the measure would be covered by raising fees on new mortgages backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The fees, drawn from a Treasury Department housing finance market reform plan, would effectively raise the interest rate on home loans guaranteed by the mortgage giants and the Federal Housing Administration by one-tenth of a percentage point.

The idea is to open up the market to private companies currently priced out by the implicit subsidies of Fannie and Freddie.

The White House says the fee would increase the monthly cost of a typical $220,000 mortgage by almost $15 a month. Over 30 years, the fees would increase the total cost of such a mortgage by more than $5,000.

In contrast, a worker making a $100,000 salary would reap a tax cut of about $330 through the two-month extension of the payroll tax cut. A worker with a typical $50,000 salary would get just a $165 tax cut.

Officials said that in private talks, the two sides had hoped to reach agreement on the full one-year extension of the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits that Obama had made the centerpiece of the jobs program he submitted to Congress last fall.

Those efforts failed when the two sides could not agree on enough offsetting cuts to blunt the measure's impact on the debt.

The failure tees up the issue again for early next year, but it won't get any easier to agree on spending cuts.

Neither House Speaker Boehner nor his aides participated in the negotiations, although McConnell said he was optimistic about the measure's chances for final approval. The payroll tax cut is unpopular in GOP ranks and another vote in two months could present a headache for GOP leaders.

On the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, the legislation requires the president to grant a permit unless he makes a determination that it is "not in the national interest." One senior administration official said the president would almost certainly refuse to grant a permit. The official was not authorized to speak publicly.

The White House on Friday backed away from Obama's earlier threat to veto any bill that linked the payroll tax cut extension with a Republican demand for a speedy decision on the proposed 1,700-mile pipeline. Obama said on Dec. 7 that "any effort to try to tie Keystone to the payroll tax cut I will reject. So everybody should be on notice."

The president recently announced he was postponing a decision on the much-studied pipeline until after the 2012 election. Environmentalists oppose the project, but several unions support it. The legislation puts the president in the uncomfortable position of having to choose between customary political allies.

The State Department, in an analysis released this summer, said the pipeline project would create up to 6,000 jobs during construction, while developer TransCanada put the total at 20,000 in direct employment.

The pipeline would carry oil from western Canada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries, passing through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma.

The spending bill locks in spending cuts that conservative Republicans won from the White House and Democrats earlier in the year.

Republicans also won their fight to block new federal regulations for light bulb energy efficiency, coal dust in mines and clean water permits for construction of timber roads.

The White House turned back GOP attempts to block limits on greenhouse gases, mountaintop removal mining and hazardous emissions from utility plants, industrial boilers and cement kilns.
